Live Poll: Code of Conducting

Not unlike film directors, music conductors are responsible for extracting the best efforts from each participant and combining them into a harmonious result.

Who gave the best performance?

Wow, what a great list. I haven't seen Tár yet but based on the eight or nine of these performances I've seen, I'd say JK Simmons or Tomasz Kot. I'd love to see Caine in 'Youth' and Gielgud in 'The Conductor.'

I haven't seen the Gielgud film, and it doesn't have many ratings so I guess not many people have, but I just had to include it.

I just saw that the film is available here - with Spanish subtitles, so here's one for Pencho:

@Peter_pbn ,

Great poll. Each of these orchestra directors have interesting and compelling styles of directing. I'm having a hard time choosing.

I'm assuming that you are excluding orchestra directors who appear as themselves in films. Otherwise, Leopold Stokowski (Self - Conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra) would be eligible for conducting in Fantasia (1940), along with many others.

Here, are some possibilities for your consideration. They run the gamut from real conductors in cameos to symphony conductors to conducting choir directors to conducting band leaders. Plus, more than a few notable names and movies made the list.

These FYC items may be borderline, depending on your parameters. Mr. Bean takes a stab at leading a Salvation Army Jazz Band in a supermarket. Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer's Apprentice seems to be conducting to reverse a legion of out of control brooms from a spell in Fantasia, scored with classical music. Jerry Lewis, I think is pretending to conduct on an empty stage (I has been awhile since I saw this film). Plus, there are four FYC items from television shows and three are animated short films.

I am sorry for the size of the images, I think it is better than posting the larger individual screen grabs. I likely won't post a suggestion this way again. You can click the picture and it will show at a higher resolution and can be scaled up to be more readable.

@cinephile ,

This is an amazing dance performance to Bolero.

Ravel would be impressed.
