Live Poll: "Cinéma du look" (1980s-1990s)

"Cinéma du look" is a term coined in 1989 by Raphaël Bassan to describe the cinema of Leos Carax, Luc Besson and Jean-Jacques Beineix often inspired by the rythm and the look of clips and commercials. With the death of Jean-Jacques Beineix it is timely to pay homage to this great cinematic movement.

So, from these ten films considered as milestones of the "cinéma du look" during the 1980s and 1990s which is your favorite?

Good suggestion... but should we include "Leon"? It might be the culmination of the 'new look'  but it's too Americanized to be associated with that French new wave... and too popular not to steal precious votes :)

It is a complex question because in most essays I have read they do categorize Leon as part of the "cinéma du look." As a neophyte in that artistic current I wouldn't put their opinion in doubt.

Plus, it seems after informing myself that the "cinéma du look" was something on the sidelines of French popular cinema of 1980s-1990s. I acquired critical acclaimed later on, but at first, a film like Diva (1981) was booed by critics. What I'm getting at is, it seems to be that the "cinéma du look", a bit like the Dogme 95, isn't as bound to French cinema/identity as it is to the career of those three filmmakers. Consequently, it feels unfair to exclude Leon because it supposedly was too Americanized.

But, on the other hand, I can't refute that Luc Besson had already, by 1994, distanced himself from the French cinema conventions. That is why it is a complex question.

I'm not a big fan of one-sided polls, but it is hard to refute that Leon isn't part of the "cinéma du look." I won't deny a couple hundred more votes. It is more important for people to discover the "cinéma du look" than for the poll to have an equal repartition of votes.
