I can't think of many things that stand so iconic for America throughout the world.

The cinematic foundation that christened the highway "The Mother Road" during the Great Depression.

I think it was the novel which used the term.

@Peter_pbn ,

Thank you for pointing this out. I conflated Steinbeck's novel and the film.

I did some further checking. Steinbeck's novel originates the term "The Mother Road".

The film does not use that term. I changed this to:

Steinbeck's novel, upon which the film is based, christened the highway "The Mother Road" during the Great Depression.

I actually live within five miles of Route 66 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  I have also lived in three other cities/towns that are also on The Mother Road (Moriarty and Tucumcari in New Mexico and Amarillo, Texas).  I've been getting my kicks on Route 66 for over 20 years.
