@mariojacobs

What makes a series a 2010s series? Castle and The Closer both ran in the 2010s, but debuted in the 2000s. Are they 2000s series, 2010s series or both for the purpose of the poll?

Are you sure Fargo and Better Call Saul can be called detective series?

They certainly fall into the broader scope as crime drama series. But, I am not sure they fit into the detective subgenre, like all the others do.

I don't watch these shows, but they seem to lack the lead detective characters all your other answer options have. Plus, I think it is fair to expect those characters be the primary focus of something called a "detective series" and you specifically mentioned  the term in both the title and question.

In a related note, Michael Ehrmantraut is more a fixer or criminal than private investigator in my eyes.

I agree, at least Better Call Saul probably doesn't belong (haven't seen Fargo).

@mariojacobs  I don't think Fargo is a detective series either, in the three season I watched it focuses more on the criminals.

@mariojacobs, This has the potential to be a great poll suggestion, but you are falling into the same trap you always do, listing fringe candidates and options that don't belong before the obvious choices. IMHO, I would do another advanced title search on TV series in the crime genre between 2010 and 2019, sorted by votes. I would select from the list only the TV or streaming platform series that started between those dates and primarily focus on detectives (not beat cops, not criminals, or etc.). If you are unsure, use Wikipedia to check the series if it is classified as a detective, police procedural, or other applicable subgenre (not just crime alone). If that means looking up each crime series on the list, then that is what is required to be thorough.

Detective series revolve around detectives with the lives of criminals being secondary.

You should be listing the obvious choices first and the fringe options last, or maybe not even at all. Series that are seemingly both should be secondary options, after you have filled your answer pool with lots of primary options (series that obviously fit the bill), and even then they shouldn't be the majority of answer choices, but listing a few of them under certain circumstances is okay. I think there are enough strong options that you should not consider the secondary options at all.

I also think you should be clear on what makes it a 2010s series, Does the series have to debuted in the 2010s or only run at least one season in the decade. Personally, I think I would limit to debuts only, as it avoids a whole bunch of issues, especially when doing multiple decade polls or having series double listed, as well as, knowing it is finite since no new series can debut now that we are in the 2020s. There are more than plenty of notable detective series in the decade to fill out this answer pool full of the max. 35 options.

For Your Consideration, a revised question.

Which detective series that debuted in the 2010s is your favorite?

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=tv_series,tv_miniseries&release_date=2010-01-01,2019-12-31&genres=crime&sort=num_votes,desc&view=advanced

List only the TV or streaming platform series that started between those dates and primarily focus on detectives (not beat cops, not criminals, or etc.).

I noticed errors on this list too, so I would cross-check it with Wikipedia to see if each series is in a detective or police procedural listed genre, before adding it your IMDb list. But, it is a good source for leads and potential candidates to fill out your answer pool from.

@urbanemovies I agree, debuted in the 2010s makes the description more accurate. Thus, Castle and The Closer also removed.

I think the answer pool would be benefit if you replaced these weaker option TV series (lower voted & lower rated) or you could wait until you are close to maxing out and need options to cut.

and upgrade them to stronger TV series options

(higher voted & higher rated)

Judgement Calls
(I perceive these as Mystery Series that star detectives and I would include them, IMHO. But, you should check the plot summaries to make your own call.)

@urbanemovies thanks, for now, I included the series that have the word "detective" in their plot summaries or keywords list. Unfortunately, Dexter debuted in 2006 and Mare of Easttown in 2021. I also sorted the titles by ratings:

9.x

8.x

7.x

6.x

@mariojacobs, nice catch on noticing Dexter debuting in 2006 and Mare of Easttown in 2021. I followed both shows and felt comfortable recommending them, even though they are not cookie cutter detective series (too bad the debut date was off). I know with the amount of series, the fact the scope covers an entire decade, and the popularity of the genre, there are more unlisted series out there.

@urbanemovies I added 5 more titles based on IMDb advanced keyword search + manual CONTROL F plot summary search.

@mariojacobs I found some more, but you need to further define your scope to include or not include police detectives, private investigators, amateur sleuths, and others outside of those three broad classes. I would double check anything I list.

@urbanemovies I included 2 more titles, one have the word detective in the plot summary, the other in the keyword list (2 times).

@mariojacobs I am of the opinion that there may be a few more detective series out there, but we have found 80-90% of the notable ones. Also, you may not had time to give the list a final once over.

If I were you, I would focus on asking yourself, if you have the right 35 answer choices listed. There seem to be a number of lower rated, lower voted titles with some better detective series choices sitting on the sidelines. I don't think  being on the list just because you found it first is a valid reason.

I think it okay to list the 7.9+ titles under 10k votes, but would question why some other titles are being listed, when better voted, higher rated and more detective-focused shows are being not listed.

If you an affinity for something like Nancy Drew, Magnum P.I. or another weaker detective series you want to list, but seemingly doesn't make the cut. Personally, I would list it as the #35 "everything else option", with the caption

Another 2010s Detective Series Listed

Nancy Drew (as the pictured example)

That way it can be the standard bearer for all the titles you couldn't fit in, poll takers can vote for any missing options, and you can list of personal favorite without claiming it is in the same class as the other detective series (based on the numbers).

I found two more 2010 detective series.

@mariojacobs

Is that a question? You need to pick the 35 most deserving detective series and only one title to represent the final #35 option, Another 2010s Detective Series Not Listed.

I question these six inclusions that are under 7.5 rated and have less than 12,500 votes @ #20. Black Spot (2017–2019), #25. Private Eyes (2016–2021), #26. Comrade Detective (2017) #31. Hudson & Rex (2019– ), #35. Law & Order: LA (2010–2011), and #36. Nancy Drew (2019–2023); when there twenty detectives series higher rated and unlisted and 12 higher rated and having at least 20,000 votes (with many exceeding 50k IMDb votes) and unlisted. I can see having one or maybe two listed for whatever reason you have (It sounds like plot keyword mentions are a big factor.), but not six titles, when there are detective shows with between 50k and 150k IMDb votes not being listed and higher rated than these weaker options.

@mariojacobs,

Looks good, I don't see any glaring issues anymore with the removal of the handful of lower rated, lower voted options. It seems like a pretty solid answer pool with no debatable options, and only a few that are more a matter of preference, which will vary from pollmaker to pollmaker.

I am not suggesting any changes per se, but want to point out "Jessica Jones" and "The Sinner" are possible options that could be added and have 215,000+ and 130,000+ votes respectively. You might want to go through the unlisted suggestions posted above one last time to see if anything else jumps out at you.

Also, I like that you kept the lower vote total, but highly rated 8.0+ detective options, like Signal (2016) [8.5 rated, 8k votes]. I think that was the right move. If you remove anything to add something, I think there are some mid-seven rated options that should be the first to go.

@mariojacobs That's the rub, to add two, you have remove two. I probably would have picked the same two to take off. Hawaii-Five-0 never struck me as a detective show with its actions packed former SEAL-led task force. But, who would have believed a week ago, you would be kicking Hawaii-Five-0 off the list to make room for a better option.

These three are probably worthy of a second look, if you think they offer an upgrade over an existing option(s) and qualify as a 2010s detective series.

@urbanemovies thanks, but I am running out of options. All the remaining titles have the word DETECTIVE in the plot summary or a rating of 7.x or higher. I don't know which series to remove...

I decided against

15. Line of Duty (2012–2021)

TV-14 | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

 8,7
Drama series following the investigations of AC-12, a controversial police anti-corruption unit.

I added

34.Endeavour(2012–2023)

TV-14|89 min|Crime, Drama, Mystery

8,6

Although I think Babylon Berlin seems to be more interesting from what I read in the plot summary.

Its certainly your call, but saying you don't have room for three detective series rated 8.1, 8.4 and 8.6, because you are

"...running out of options. All the remaining titles have the word DETECTIVE in the plot summary or a rating of 7.x or higher. "

seems illogical. Plus, it seems like a good problem to have, I wish all my poll suggestions had that problem.
