Live Poll: The Best 2000s Psychological Thriller

These films showed us characters suffering huge breakdowns and as a viewer, we were sucked right into their crumbling worlds along with them. Tense, provoking, mind-bending; these are the best psychological-thriller films of the 2000s.

Which of these 2000s psychological thrillers are you most likely to remember?

Completely agree. It is also a completely different story to your standard thriller film

Gulp! Another winner. Can't you see people are trying to get on the homepage, Kyle?! Have pity!

Before clicking, I bet the Top 5 is:

Memento
Inception
Requiem for a Dream
Mulholland Dr.
Finding Dory, I mean Black Swan

let's see...

OK; 3 out of 5.
I invite you to reconsider the Top 5, Requiem is more obvious than American Psycho (never thought it was a psychological thriller, the man was plain crazy from the start, there was no real suspense about his condition)

LOL, funny. Inception, FD and Black Swan are all 2010s (different decade) so they wont be apart of this list.

As for Requiem, Wikipedia classifies it as a "American psychological drama film" which can technically be considered psycho-thriller but perhaps I can re-conisder. Same goes for American Psycho.

Well, from the fact that I got the 2010s and 2000s mixed up, you can tell that I didn't put much of my intellect in that post, mea culpa.

i didn't plain crazy in the sense that he was one-dimensional but well... maybe I should watch the film before emitting a definite opinion. As for Requiem, I disagree, the the end of the second act and whole first act do play like thrillers, the climactic montage contains more thrills and heart-pounding moments than many legitimate thrillers have to offer in two hours.

What did I say? Lol. I knew it!

Personally, it was a tight competition between Mulholland drive and Memento. But after a thinking i would go with Mulholland drive, because it just doesn't reveal most of the part at the end, on contrary it provokes the viewer to rewatch and find the meanings himself. And that is what makes it unique among this unique genre.

Some of these I consider only as a "Thriller" not as a "psychological thriller," but since you did your research, I think maybe I'm wrong, but anyway I go with "Requiem for a Dream".

For example i think "Mystic River", "Zodiac" is more like a Thriller/Crime but i'm not a expert on the subgenre area so, i can't judge and say that i'm totally right.

I understand that your research has led to this, so maybe it's the right one.

Kyle,

IMDb does not consider the following films to be thrillers. I'm not certain whether they can be considered psychological thrillers.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
The Prestige (2006)
American Psycho (2000)
Unbreakable (2000)
Mystic River (2003)
Zodiac (2007)
The Number 23 (2007)
What Lies Beneath (2000)
Session 9 (2001)
Disturbia (2007)
The Uninvited (2009)
A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)
Awake (2007)
Funny Games (2007)
88 Minutes (2007)

Dan, most of those are listed as thrillers. You have to check the Storyline section of their pages to see the full genre listings. You can also use the 'Refine' tool in the list.

The ones that are not listed as thrillers are Requiem for a DreamAmerican Psycho and Session 9. Even so, other sources may consider them thrillers.

Great job on that poll!

It's so tough to choice it hurts, though, having two of my 25 favorite movies (both of them from 2001, oddly enough: Hannibal and Donnie Darko) and also Unbreakable (2000), which is equally terrific.

Since Unbreakable and Donnie Darko are multi-genre efforts I decided to vote for Hannibal, though, an often underrated movie which is often unfairly considered subpar compared to The Silence of the Lambs. It's actually quite odd that Hannbal is my favorite fo the franchise (which I like in entirety), considering that original novel is my least favorite in the franchise (still a good one, though just clattered with subplots a bit in my humble opinion).

Hannibal is one of the few (two) movies in which Lecter/Lecktor actually gets to roam free for most of the screen time. It's kind of exotic as well.
