Half of these movies have weapons in their posters, but thank God they didn't romanticize smoking.

I initially thought the same thing, that it was overblown as an issue. But, I looked into the facts and it was pretty conclusive and destructive. 1) Smoking in movies in highly influential on children 2) The tobacco industry cultivates new consumers through paid product placement in movies https://smokefreemovies.ucsf.edu/history 3) limitations on gearing this type of advertising to children would cut their market by 20% and save over a million lives. 4) Studios seem to be moving in the right direction with half as many movies with smoking, but there is still work to do. Check out this interesting website on the topic: https://smokefreemovies.ucsf.edu/research/about-evidence

Could I impose on you to edit my update into the main post. Thanks, in advance. Seems topical as most of the Quit Smoking days are in March, including Kick Butts Day which is the tie-in to action movies and the poll suggestion.I think it is cool that some movies are taking the same step to Kicking Butts and forgoing the cash payout a product placement from tobacco companies brings.

Half of these movies have weapons in their posters ...
What do we expect from a list of action films?

With or without weapons, action films typically include violence.
Let's make a list of nonviolent action movies.   ... j/k

Funny, as a general rule I am against censoring movies. I can see weapons and violence being an inherent part of action films, take them away in action film and there is not much left to enjoy. Even so, it is easy to separate fantasy from reality and enjoy it for what it is. I guess, my point on the topic is, what does the fact that the actor smokes or chews add to the movie to make it more thrilling or exciting.

urbanemovies,

FYI: GS's spam filter flagged your post as spam.

I guessing the filter thought you were advertising illicit images. GS has had problems with people posting extremely graphic images, and links to gambling and adult sites.

This is a heads up for poll authors that GS's spam filter may flag posts as spam even when they are not.

Dan, many of the posts I have seen in that filter are so random that I couldn't begin to speculate about the reasons.

Peter,

I agree that GS's spam filter appears to be random. There are a few instances, like urbanemovies' post that have viable explanations.

300 is cheating.

The way things are worded, it looks like there's smoking in Star Wars II, IV, and V, but I don't recall any in any of those.

In Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones - Bar Scene

Anakin and Obi-Wan chase assasin, Zam Wesell into a bar. Elan Sleazebaggano is smoking the Coruscant version of a cigarette, called a "death stick" and approaches Obi-Wan. Smoking is clearly featured but the message is anti-smoking and an inside joke, still it misses the cut by not being smoke-free.

Elan: "You wanna buy some death sticks?"
Obi-Wan: (performing Jedi mind trick) "You don't want to sell me death sticks."
Elan: "I don't wanna sell you death sticks."
Obi-Wan: (performing Jedi mind trick) "You want to go home and rethink your life."
Elan: "I wanna go home and rethink my life."

In Star Wars IV: New Hope - Cantina Scene
Luke and Obi-Wan enter the cantina, the bar is smoke filled, Dannik Jerriko is seen smoking from a hookah-like device, probably multiple other depictions.

In Star Wars VI: Return of Jedi - Palace Throne Room Scene
Jabba the Hutt is seen smoking from a green liquid and smoke filled hookah-like device in his palace throne room..

Movies made from 2001 or earlier are not included in the Smoke-Free Movie database.

You can double check any movie made since 2002 and see the specific instances of tobacco use. Just type the movie title in the Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down! Movie Database Search Box located in upper right hand corner at smokefreemovies.com or just click the hyperlink on the poll or the above posting to get there quick.

Updated 01 July 2017: Logan met requirements for a top Action movie (high rating and widely watched), but failed to meet smoke-free requirements. Sadly, the movie could have been  easily smoke-free, as the smoking was limited to an extra. https://tutd.ucsf.edu/movie/62860
