Mario, thank you very much for suggesting. I've instantly put Cher and Starship on the list and take the others for consideration. I've put Erasure on the list, but it's a little like Kim Wilde. She is one of the lower celebs on the list, facing Cher, Mick Jagger or Elton Jown. So Erasure is surely a typical 80s band, but I'm not really sure, if they had their best time in the 80s. I remember the "Gaudete" they released in 2013. That was a clear buy. "Always" was in the 90s. And I don't know really much songs of them. Who is PC Lion? PC who? ;)

I think Guns n Roses is strongly konoted to rock. But they really had big song, I would count to mainstream. So I'll put them on the list. Olivia Newton John - a strong pick, an 80s icon. Woop ... on the list.

Modern Talking, Nena. Were they really big, according to the whole world and facing Tina Turner, Phil Collins, Freddy Mercury? How big was the success of Modern Talking in the U.S.? Nena? - Maybe. Please tell me your own sight. I can read the charts, ok, but a personal view would be better, maybe.

Thank you for adding a better video. I know you want to be helpful and yes, these examples are even better. When you look at the list, I didn't put the most successful video of any band in the options. That bases on the idea, that the groups shouldn't be reduced to their most successful songs, people will remember them anyway. But it's a hint for the people to think of the other great songs they did, by not keeping the mega-hits in the option. I strongly tried to put a song of every group in it's option, but not that song, everybody remembers. Else I would have put a video of It's A Kind Of Magic on the option of Freddy Mercury. But he (they) had many many other excellent songs and that's what I want the people to remember. Thank you for contributing. :)

You inspired me really good, thank you. I've also put Toto on the list, because they had real great numbers, which gained world wide recognition. I left out Van Halen, because I don't want to make a rock only list. On the other hand - Maybe I'll reconsider him later. But Chicago surely has a strongly mainstream character. So I've put Chicago on the list. They did the soundtrack in many 80s movies and were on the broadcast all the time in the 80s. I still remember. They had a good run.

Hm, I included them because they were so popular in the mainstream that I think they are one of them which stood on the border between sheer pop and rock. I think they broke the border with a few songs, made it fade. I know that you are deeply in love with rock. Don't you think, too, that they are pop? Like an intersection? What would you suggest? If you made up the idea, would you erase the two options? I know it's a little difficult to make up rules for working out a clear border on a fluid line.

After the suggestion of Peter, I think you are right. Maybe it's better to kick them of the list. I'll do.

I guess Springsteen and Axl Rose can be added again, since you've included "Rock".

Sure. I added them on the second list. Just got to complete it. We surely will find up to 11 further  candidates for the second list to reach 25 options. I think it would be too hard for many users to vote one of 35 candidates from only one list, because there are real heavyweiths of pop and rock on the first list. So Springsteen and Rose got better chances on the second list. I just got to work it out, but got no time at the moment. In 10 hours I might have more time to do. Thank you.

I just searched for his 80s songs. They are all clearly chanson. Like Gilbert Becaud or Mirreile Mathieu. Even though I wondered that he had sung with Diana Ross. I don't see the crossing of the border by his music. I know my mother heard him and the others I named and many more of them. Might it be that you mixed him up with his son? His son Enrique Iglesias (Discography) did pop later in the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s.

Of course I'm not.

In the Latin direction there was also Gloria Estefan.
