LIVE POLL: Oscar's Best Writer-Director-Producer Triple Threat

As of 2021, "officially" thirty-one individuals across thirty-seven films have secured triple Oscar nominations in the writing, directing and producing categories for the same film. In another four other instances, Orson Welles, Leo McCarey, George Lucas and The Coen Brothers "unofficially" secured the same film triple, but were denied official credit due to Academy or guild (WGA/DGA/PGA) policies at the time.

Which person nominated in the writing, director and producer Oscar categories for the same film best combined their script writing, directorial and project management skills for the greatest effect?

If you did one option per filmmaker you could fit them all in.

I considered that, but placed a little more emphasis on the fruits of their labor, the film. I didn't want to remove some more worthy films to replace them with a weaker movie option. In the end, I tried to balance both the films and filmmakers in the answer options. The question asks poll takers about both, the filmmakers process and talent, as well as, the end result of each filmmaker(film). My initial answer pool is the best selection of that based on my gut.

To be more objective in my evaluation of films and get the right filmmakers and films in the answer pool. I have added a 7.4+/7.5+ cutoff IMDb rating. The resulting additions and deletions are as follows @ a 7.4+ IMDb rating cut-off:

SUBTRACT

If you have to prioritize, I'm not sure it makes sense to prioritize "unofficial" nominees over actual nominees. Especially when your question reads, "Which person nominated in the writing, director and producer Oscar categories ..."

Urb, if you're going to do it that way, I think you probably should clarify that in the intro. As it is, the intro says "As of 2021, "officially" thirty-two individuals across thirty-eight films have secured triple Oscar nominations in the writing, directing and producing categories for the same film" but there are actually 42 films, right? (And I'm not sure of the exact number of individuals but isn't it higher than 32?)

Thirty-two individuals and thirty-eight films, yields a difference of six. Seven films are from duplicate WDP's and an offset of one for the Coen Brothers being two people gets you the difference of six.

-1 Oliver Stone (JFK +Born of Fourth of July)

-2 Stanley Kubrick (Barry Lyndon, Strangelove, Clockwork Orange)

+ 0 Coen Brothers (True Grit, No Country for Old Men)

-1 Peter Jackson (Fellowship, Return of King)

-1 Francis Ford Cop polls (Apocalypse Now, Godfather II)

-1 Warren Beatty(Reds, Heaven Can Wait)

42 films, 35 people "unofficially"

38 films, 32 people "officially"

The thirty-three poll listed films plus The Shape of Water, The Descendants, Reds, Born on the Fourth July, and Heaven Can Wait equals thirty-eight movies.

The difference between unofficial and official is not that the film didn't get the Oscar nomination, but because of a procedural reason the person who did the work of the Writer, Director or Producer in that category didn't get listed on the nomination. Procedural rules that lack common sense, that are applied unequally and sometimes arbitrarily applied. But, you make a technically fair point and I have removed the two options.

Urb,

Per Peter's recommendation above:

Please change for #5, 15:

From:

Coen Brother's

To:

Coen Brothers'

Coen Brother's is the possessive form for one brother. Coen Brothers' is the possessive form for two or more brothers.

Hi Urb,

I noticed a typo in #34:

Term of Endearment --> Terms of Endearment

I also left a note above in the thread with you and Peter.

Are there really people who think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is better than EITHER Dr. Strangelove or Apocalypse Now?!!!

I know art is subjective, but come on!
