What a great idea, Jess! My vote would probably go to Casablanca or maybe Beginners. Oh, and I love the title!

Possible FYC: There are two couples in 'The English Patient' and I think that at least one couple (Hana & Kip) fit this poll but I can't remember for sure. Also there was a question about Ralph Fiennes' character's nationality. It's been a long time since I've seen it, though, so I'm having trouble remembering.

It is a shame that this poll doe not include Stromboli.

 Karen (Ingrid Bergman) is Latvian. Her husband Antonio (Mario Vitale) is Italian. She is unable to get accustomed to the culture of her husband. Her husband is shorter than her (not the biggest of problem but it casts her apart from the other women), poor, unintelligent. She is unable to support the isolation of the island. Throughout the film they never sleep on the same bed. There really is not any love in that film.

In a certain way, it echoes the marriage of Roberto Rossellini. Not in the sense that it was a loveless marriage. In the sense, that it was poorly seen by their contemporaries (Ingrid was already married), and that Bergman lived this situation with difficulty.

As bizarre as it seems, this analogy is a coincidence. Bergman may have inspired some of Rosselini's choice. But, as it is highlighted in their correspondence, the detailed plot of Stromboli was already written by Rossellini before he met Bergman. And, when she first wrote to him (because she first wrote to him) she had no idea of what the film was to be about. In her first letter, she only mentions that she is interested in working with him if he searches for a woman who can speak english, swedish, a bit of german and one sentence in italian (ti amo/ I love you). It is funny that she mentions "ti amo" in her first letter, it almost comes off as flirty.
