LIVE POLL: IMDb Poll Board: Favorite YouTube Channel

Which of the following YouTube channels* (as chosen by our fellow members of the IMDb Poll Board) is your favorite?

LIST:  https://www.imdb.com/list/ls566674137/

POLL:  https://www.imdb.com/poll/9hAZINOoRY0/

PLEASE READ BEFORE MAKING SUGGESTIONS:

TWO NOMINATIONS PER USER. This one might fail as a suggestion. I'm willing to accept that. I've been thinking about several different YouTube related polls (including one about film reviewers I abandoned years ago). No conspiracy/political channels. Let's keep it civil.

*YouTube channels not owned by the IMDb members themselves. Channels involving original content only (movie and tv review/essays are allowed). No music channels unless the content creator is creating new music just for his/her/their YouTube channel (no studio driven channels featuring preexisting music videos or YouTube Music channels).

Channel must have IMDb page. If you are dropping suggestions please give the channels YouTube link and their subscriber number.

@mariojacobs Was this content specifically produced for YouTube or just something produced outside of the platform then posted later to its related channel? I'll accept the former but not the latter.

@Tsarstepan I don't know, it is a webseries that I watched on Youtube. Excellent by the way, the best star trek related sequel since the original series in my opinion. Entirely made by fans of the original. Their captain Kirk is perfect and he is not even an actor, he is a musician...

Added to the list. Looks like the fan produced series was created with the intent to be added to YouTube (according to its wiki).

@Tsarstepan ,

For your consideration:

Dr. Becky (2015– )

In her own spirited style Dr. Becky examines new discoveries and oft misunderstood topics in the field of astrophysics with the occasional help of a guest. And if you ask nicely she might comment on the physics of your favorite sci-fi program.

TrekCulture (2020– )

TrekCulture explores recurring themes and trends in the programs from the Star Trek universe along with cross-series and long running story lines and recurring characters. Many of the topics are presented in the ubiquitous YouTube ten list format.

= = =

It probably makes sense to have separate polls for content creators and film reviewers. Likewise, a minimum number of subscribers for a YouTube channel may make sense. However, lets see what kind of response you get before making this decision. Simply having the requirement that a YouTube channel must have an IMDb page may be sufficient.

I'd never heard of Becky Smethurst, and I'm surprised that the YouTube algorithm has never recommended any of her work, but maybe that's because I rarely look deeply into astrophysics and cosmology, even though I'm often interested in coronal mass ejections (solar flares). heliospheres, cosmic rays, single event upsets, planetary magnetic fields and the James Van Allen radiation belts, not so much gravitational singularities.

I do somewhat track Derek Muller (Veritasium), Mehdi Sadaghdar (ElectroBOOM), Michael Stevens (Vsauce), Brady Haran (Numberphile), Jordan Harrod, Kyle Hill (Because Science), Zach Star, Presh Talwalkar (Mind Your Decisions), Toby Hendy (Tibees), Burkard Polster (Mathologer), Kevin Lieber (Vsauce2), Jake Roper (Vsauce3), Nigel Braun (NileRed), Alec Watson (Technology Connections) and Rob Braxman Tech, hence my surprise. I named several mathematics-oriented folks, though. So, that's bound to lead to subject matter separate from niche areas of natural science.

I subscribe to Numberphile (https://www.youtube.com/@Numberphile) and I'm familiar with a few of the others. Your list of YouTube channels sound intriguing.

Wow. Thank you, Dan.

I did already mention Veritasium, by the way, as everybody might note. I do sometimes come across various Public Broadcast Station programs on YouTube. NOVA is a show that goes way back, of course. Neil DeGrasse Tyson has hosted various PBS shows about natural sciences. Quite a few PBS shows have YouTube channels to correspond with them. I've actually looked searched for Ask This Old House, Secrets of the Dead, Steven Raichlen and Rick Bayless. As to be expected from what I indicated earlier in this thread, I seek out a lot of political and historical material, so invariably I've come across Frontline, which is another one I had already been watching before YouTube rose to prominence. One episode, Generation Like, actually features several YouTubers, but some of them have sadly fallen in obscurity.

There are channels on Youtube??????????

I just turn the thing on occasionally and listen to videos of the singers that I like.

Yes, I am old, a technophobe, and a ludite.  A few hundred years ago I probably would have been a flat earther too.

This is a YouTube channel I suspect you would like:

@dan_dassow While I do enjoy Sinatra and the others you name, my favorite musicians of all time are actually:

Karen Carpenter (best female vocalist of all time)

John Denver (best concert I ever attended)

Neil Diamond

The Beatles

The Eagles

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

The most recent concerts I attended were for Celtic Woman and Gordon Lightfoot.  I enjoy some of the older country (Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, The Statler Brothers), some of the older Gospel, some instruments (Ashokan Farewell or Andre Rieu, for example), Early rock, folk rock, big band, and a lot of different styles of MUSIC (and I do not count (c)rap, hip hop, grunge, or heavy metal as music).

So many YouTube incredible channels exist, it is kind of hard to have a favorite. Also, favorites change over time, depending on what is going on in the lives of the content creators, the lives of the viewers, or the world overall. For instance, during the early stages of the pandemic, I gained an interest in Roger Seheult's videos, and once in while I still visit the corresponding channel, but I wouldn't consider it a favorite. Oddly a lot of the channels that interest me the most are indeed oriented around politics, even conspiracies or so-condemned "theories" to that effect. Anyway, in trying to follow the criteria laid out (e.g. the "Channel must have IMDb page" criterion), one show that comes to my mind but which I hardly ever watch is Cecil Trachenburg's Good Bad FlicksUCtKttDTGqEbBrC7jDN2_axQ. I'm not exactly a quick study as to which non-political YouTube channels I do frequently monitor that have IMDb title pages. I see that there is some coverage of Simon Whistler's content. He is not especially political, but some of his YouTube channels do delve into proven conspiracies (even ones orchestrated by institutions like governmental, business, charitable, ecclesiastical, recreational and academic entities, possibly think tanks as well, not just families and gangs.) Come to think of it, there is Arran Lomas's Thoughty2: UCRlICXvO4XR4HMeEB9JjDlA. Even though he is not especially political, he is unfortunately sometimes propagates pseudoscientific research, which is easy to do when discussing topics that are even slightly esoteric. I'd imagine that at good two thirds of the informative channels on YouTube fall into that hole and never crawl out of it.

I like David Lynch is youtube channel. He is such a great director. He could make a thousand things. but instead he has this daily lottery and weather report. It gives me anxiety though, since he posts daily I know the day he will stop posting, he will be dead.

I also like YaleCourses and MITopencourseware. I have watched David Thornburn's Introduction to Film Theory (or History), I learned a lot. I have also watched introduction course to python.

I revere Daisuke Beppu:

Since I have watched his channel. He is so modest and respectful. Almost too much 😂. But, don't tell him, he will feel bad and apologize for it 🤣. I don't think I have ever seen him give a bad review of a film, he praises Supergirl (1984), Jason X (2001), but he also loves Andrei Rublev (1966) and very obscure films.

In french - When I want clash and controversy I watch Antoine Goya (it is in french).  He is well-read and he spends his time criticizing exactly the kind of youtubers that I don't like.

When I need a cool introduction to a match related subject, I go to this channel, it is helpful. Plus, She has a beautiful smile, a nice voice, and she draws pretty well with chalk. If math asmr this is it.

https://www.youtube.com/@tibees

In French- For anything about elegance. Hugo can appear as an elitist, but he doesn't hate people who dress poorly, he just loves elegance.

https://www.youtube.com/@DiscussionsSartoriales

I watch this channel for the music, but also because she has a good sense of cinematography.

https://www.youtube.com/@NaomiSV

She has a most interesting view on films. She focuses her channel on female character of horror films. She also interviews female directors. So it is most definitely a feminist channel. If you are worried that she might hate on male or male-directed film be reassured, it is not the purpose of her channel. Really, her goal is to bring the spotlight on females that is all. And, she has a peculiar taste in film. I like people who have peculiar tastes.

One of them I loved was the channel FilmKritikTV from Franc Tausch.

Sadly Franc died in Los Angeles in August 12, 2012. He was THE BEST!

Alas, one complication could be that some people's only favorite channels (that also have their original content documented on IMDb) are vaguely anything but divorced from political matters.
