Live Poll: Highest Rated Films by IMDb Poll Board Contributors

This poll is based on the rating histories of the 120 most active participants on the IMDb Poll Board during 2017. For a film to make this list it must be rated by at least 60 people. Which of these films is your favorite?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls044438721/
Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/Omo8DyLUqJs/

This is a summary of the ratings of 22,307 films from these 120 active participants: Ratings_Summary

= = =

My concept is to export the ratings for all the IMDb Poll Board and IMDb GS Poll Board contributors with public ratings. I would average the ratings and find the 35 top rated films for the contributors and create a poll.

As you may notice, I have not provided a list. Since this may be a fair amount of effort, I would like some feedback on whether thiswould make an interesting poll before I create the list.

Due to privacy concerns, I will not identify whois included in the poll. Likewise, I will not use anyone’s ratings list if theyprefer that I do not use it.

I'm sure we'd be interested to see the list, and it might make a decent poll. It does sound like an effort, and I guess we haven't all rated the same films, but there must be some common ground.

Regardless of whether this makes a decent poll, I will post a link to summary of the results.

What if we rated more than 35 movies a 10?

ElM,

It doesn't make any difference. I will download the public ratings for all the contributors to the IMDb Poll board and GS IMDb Poll board, then average the ratings. If the ratings are not public, they will not be included in the average.

I'm not asking anyone to provide their ratings in this thread. However, you can if you wish to do so.

Sounds like a great idea. I wonder if the result will deviate a lot from the IMDb 250. Mine will definitely be different.

leavey-2,

Thanks for your support.

I agree it will be interesting to compare how we collectively rate films versus IMDb in general. When I publish the summary, I will include the overall rating of the film and the IMDb Top 250 rank as appropriate.

That would be fascinating. That sounds pretty labor-intensive and you already do so much but, if you decide to do that, I think that would be widely popular among poll authors. It seems like it would be a great poll, as well, and the results of the voters would also be really interesting. If there's any way any one could help, certainly let us know.

Hip-hip-hooray for Captain Dan! : )

ruby,

Thanks for the encouragement. I've downloaded 28 ratings histories so far. Collectively, poll authors and other contributors have a diverse taste in films.

It's labor intensive, so it will take a fair amount of time. Unfortunately, there is no practical way for people to help me in compiling the data.

After I compile the data, I will ask for advice on the minimum number of votes for a title to be included in the poll.

I think you should start with that parameter, it might be the most relevant for the poll.

Begin by selecting the movies with a specific number of votes. If you work on 28 members, then how about focusing on movies that got at least 14 votes (that appear in 14 lists, or 20... or maybe you'll find out that there are movies rated by all of us.

There's no need to have movies that only 1,2 or 3 of us have rated a 10.

I suppose you have a table for each user, each table contains hundreds of movies and their ratings, if that's the case you add in each line the name of the user and combine all the elements, so you have a table with these categories:

user ----- movie ------ rating

if you use Excel pivot table, you can see how many times Pulp Fiction or The Good, the Bad and the Ugly were featured in a list (a number between 1 and 28) and you can calculate the average rating for the movies you'll have selected. I'm pretty sure you already know that so maybe that's not the way it works.

ElM,

I'm using Excel pivot tables to tabulate the results. I will probably have to tabulate portions and combine together later.

For 28 users and a minimum of 14 votes, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly has 19 votes with a rank of 14 and an average rating of 8.579. This is lower than IMDb's overall rank of 9 and rating of 8.9.

Like I said before, I really like your idea and I'm very curious about this top 35. I hope for a lot of non-top250 movies. It would be an amazing poll.

I remember I onced tried to make a Top 250 of IMDb poll board contributors, but after downloading the vote histories, It was so much information and it was complicated to link an address to each title that I let it go.

However I find it to be a great idea and I totally support it, feel free to use my vote history.

Dan,

This is a great idea - it certainly is no easy task but it will yield some highly interesting results. As people have already mentioned above, it will be interesting to see how much this deviates away from the IMDb Top 250 - I would imagine quite a bit of overlap.

Excited for this!

Not that surprising then, although the Godfather movies are lower than in the Top 250, and newer films like Inside Out and Spotlight rank higher.

Pencho15 and rubyfruit76,

IMDb changed the format of the exported list while I was compiling the list.
