I like David Lean, Alfred Hitchcock, Charlie Chaplin, Ridley Scott all for different reasons. It is really hard to choose one, probably depends on how greatest is defined.

FYC. Tony Scott, He wouldn't get my vote, but I think he has the credentials to get into the discussion with a resume of fifteen excellent movies that would be on par with some of the others.
