Not sure that's true. Spielberg revealed that he wanted Harrison Ford to play the role, and he would obviously have been great.

My vote: "But that's not what I'm gonna do."
I used to dislike Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler as a kid because my favorite character is and always will be Robert Muldoon and I was angry that no one worried about him after he went into the forest alone to hunt the raptors.
We knew he died, but the characters didn't and no one bothered to ask what happened to him.
But I can forgive them about it now.
