Live Poll: Face-Off: 'First Man' vs. 'Beale Street'

At The Oscars (2017) we saw one of the most strange moments in the Academy Awards history when there was a mix-up announcing the Best Picture winner.

The protagonists of the night were La La Land (2016) and Moonlight (2016).

Two years after that, the directors of those movies, Damien Chazelle and Barry Jenkins had new pictures in contention again, but while both films won Oscars, they did not compete for Best Picture nor they had a chance to have a second Face-Off between them.

That is until now.

Which of the 2017 Oscars protagonists follow up films do you think is better Damien Chazelle's First Man or Barry Jenkin's If Beale Street Could Talk?

I rated both 7/10, but I probably find Beale Street more memorable due to the aesthetics and some of the performances.

In your last paragraph it should say Jenkins' instead of Jenkin's.

'Good idea! I didn't see all of 'First Man' so that makes this tough but it probably would be a tough choice, anyway, and that makes the results really interesting.

May I suggest a few small edits to the (really good) intro?

'No problem, of course, Pencho. Besides, it gave everyone more time decide: I've seen all of 'First Man' now and it's still a tough choice.  I think I'll go with 'Beale Street' but that may mostly be because I love James Baldwin. : )

I guess Chazelle tried to make something more "challenging" after two music-related movies but you've got to question the degree of 'sincerity' in that Armstrong film, there's no doubt that Chazelle is passionate about jazz since he showed it not once but twice, when I heard about his next project, I was surprised and not in a positive way. Maybe HE should have directed "Bohemian Rhapsody".

I get the sense that Chazelle is ultimately not about music but about ambition, striving to get the top no matter what. In this way the moonlanding fits perfectly into his evolution.

The problem in "First Man" is that we already know how it ends. And it's not like "Apollo 13", we know already that the three astronauts will survive but the "how they did it?" part is interesting and captivating.

Thanks. It seems its popularity is giving First Man a lot of advantage.
