Live Poll: Face-Off: Emilia Pérez Good or Bad
This 2025 Emilia Pérez became one of the most divisive Best Picture Oscar nominees of all time. The film community received it with enthusiasm, and after winning the jury prize at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, it went on to be one of the biggest films in the award season, earning 13 nominations for the Oscars, a record for a language in a foreign language and winning over 100 awards worldwide. However, people didn't share the industry praise for the film. It is currently the worst best picture nominee ever according to the IMDb rantings, and it received harsh critics coming from the trans community and from Mexico, the two groups that were supposed to be represented by the film. The songs of the musical became viral for all the bad reasons and the film had a terrible award campaign spearheaded by some controversial social media posts made by its lead actress, but despite the fallout the film remained loved by the film industry, and it won two Oscars. So what is your opinion of the film, is it good or bad? https://www.imdb.com/list/ls593719251/

*Emilia Pérez* is clearly a film that sparked intense debate, making it one of the most polarizing Best Picture nominees in Oscar history. The stark contrast between industry acclaim and audience reception suggests that while the film may have strong artistic merits—evidenced by its Cannes Jury Prize win and record-breaking Oscar nominations—it struggled to resonate with the wider public, especially the communities it aimed to represent. Criticism from both the trans community and Mexican audiences raises questions about the film’s authenticity and cultural sensitivity. If those groups felt misrepresented or sidelined, it’s understandable why backlash followed. Additionally, the negative reception of its musical numbers and a botched awards campaign only added to the controversy. However, the film’s enduring love within the industry indicates that it likely has technical and artistic strengths—perhaps in direction, cinematography, or performances—that professionals admire. The two Oscar wins, despite the backlash, further suggest that some aspects of the film were objectively well-crafted. So, is it good or bad? It depends on perspective. If judged purely on filmmaking craft, *Emilia Pérez* seems to have been highly regarded. But if judged on impact, audience reception, and representation, it was clearly divisive and controversial.

I wonder how many can't vote on this as they haven't (or even refused to) watch the film.
