Not sure why you picked "The Godfather", the closest music to my description is the Tarantella they play during the wedding, apart from that the score is rather somber and solemn, yes, even the music during the Sicilian sequence.

Not sure too either about "Bilitis" (at least from the link you sent me) but the picture of Trintignant and Aimée reminded me of "A Man and a Woman" and I think it would fit better. Thank you=

Description is such a thing. I think the definition of whimsical is different between Englisch, French and German Language. Pons & Google Translator: It is not exactly the same. So we have different sights of what is "whimsical". When I hear the title song of 'The Godfather', I think it is launenhaft, launisch. Google translator says wunderlich, which also matches. That are German Words, which mean translated (backtranslated)

wunderlich - strange, odd
launenhaft - moody
launisch - moody, capricious

The Godfather theme is also a melody, I could think of in Sicilia, the rural areas.

Bilitis was a movie in the 70's, which has such a moody melody. I know it was an erotic milestone. But I was never interested in.

Maybe the melody style you want should be described more exact. ;)

Btw: When you hear the theme of 'The Godfather', I think the music style is not really far away from 'The Third Man'. It's both typical European music in an old style. The instruments, the sound. It's different in some ways, but you can hear the typical European sources.

Breu, I think the most accurate translation in this case is drollig, schrullig, heiter. If we translate it back it's quirky, jolly, perhaps a little silly and, as mentioned in the intro, droll.

I also was surprised when I read the definition of whimsical, that's why I came up with that lengthy definition... now if anyone can find me an adjective that defines the main themes from "Up" or "Life is Beautiful", I will gladly consider it.

"Pink Panther" became a trope for heist or burglary scenes, it's not exactly what I had in mind. "Baby Elephant" works :)

I just needed to understand what whimsical does mean. Thank you for your explanations. Now I understand your point better. For me it's always an obstacle race, especially when it comes to special words or phrases. Often they can't be translated 1:1 to German language. :D
