Live Poll: Classic Existential Comedies

Who said comedies couldn't be deep and meaningful?

Sometimes, there's more than ha-ha's behind comedies, humor can be the best way to speak deep and powerful statements about life, to make us question our own existence, or even provide a life-changing experience.

So, which of these existential comedies* most affected the way you felt about life?

(some are comedy-dramas but you got the point)

Barton Fink

I'm not sure I'd consider "Time Bandits" existential but the others fit. Though I'm not sure Barton Fink is existential on the "life changing" level, it's more about artistic inspiration.

From your list, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)  or Youth.

FYC:

Me and You and Everyone We Know
Ghost World
Dogtooth (Even though it was horrifying to see those acts, it definitely felt like a dark comedy. Even though the genres mentioned IMDb are Drama/.Thriller, I would definitely consider it as an existential comedy)
Wristcutters: A Love Story

(If you had been doing it for the TV, I would have loved to say Bojack Horseman! Best thing I have seen about existentialism)

I'm actually very flexible... as long as there's the "comedy" tag, I trust your judgment that there are elements of dark comedy in Dogtooth, but unfortunately, for this one suggestion, it seems like IMDb prefers to label it as drama / thriller. Besides, i don't think the 'dark comedy' swims in the same waters than plain comedy, for me QT's first movies are masterpiece of dark comedy but I wouldn't label them as comedies on that basis.

i added the other suggestions, thanks!

What about Jim Jarmusch's Night on Earth and Broken Flowers?

IMO Harold and Maude deserves to be here as well.

Great intro, by the way. May I suggest one small edit:

Sometimes, there's more than ha-ha's behind comedies; humor can be the best medium...

('Just changed the comma after comedies to a semi-colon.)

By the way, I'm glad you like the intro, I really mean it about humor, in a couple, humor can be the way to deliver a few truths without causing an argument.

Indeed. And well said. I mean really, really well said -- that belongs on a list of great quotes. Not surprising that it came from the master of quotes! :-)

Yeah, I suspected it would happen the night when I saw Dan's last "poll milestones" poll, it was like 799800 something so I would have been pretty confident about it even without the homepage.

So yeah, on the 10th day of the 9th month, the magic 8 was reached.
Champagne!!! (actually, apple juice it's only the morning right now)

My vote is for The Truman Show.

My vote had to go to Being John Malkovich. Synecdoche, New York and Wristcutters: A Love Story were serious contenders to but I reckoned that Being John Malkovich made me laugh most hysterically. Also an honourable mention to Little Miss Sunshine from me and as for Inside Out, although it was amazing, I would like to give it some more time to age.

As suggestions (Untitled) (a must watch for every contemporary artist, artlover, art critic and skeptic of postmodern and contemporary art), Gloria and Mujeres al borde de un ataquede nervios (Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown) come to mind.

Unexpected suggestion: In her shoes. By far my favourite chickflick and I would really like to argue that it greatly discerns itself from the otherwise formulaic and often frowned upon genre in the most positive sense. I'll never forget the perfectly places line "half the fun of sex is talking about it" from Cameron Diaz's character or the beautiful scenes between her and the old and dying literature professor who asks her barely literate character, who has recently (originally reluctantly) begun working at his nursing home, to read for him since he is no longer physically able to do so himself (I believe he has become blind). The caring, heartfelt and compassionate bond that quickly deepens between them as he encourages her not to be afraid to read and their connection is absolutely inspiring.

Oh and Lost in Translation!!! That one just HAS to be included!
I seriously only just recently watched it again and it remains one of my all-time favorite movies and as I was watching it I realised that I had completely forgotten that this movie has quite some hilariously funny scenes in it to. And now I almost forget AGAIN to mention it here!
It just doesn't register as a comedy in my brain (although it makes me laugh more than alot of movies that are billed first and foremost as comedies) as it just generally exhales such an atmosphere of contemplative and tranquil slice of life I guess.
