Live Poll : Best Movie in South Asia?

Here is the list of best South Asian movies according to the IMDb rating, award, and popularity.

Movies from Afghanistan, Bhutan, and Maldives have been dropped from the list. The list is based on movies from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, as movies from Bhutan, Afghanistan, and Maldives are not very popular.

Movies from Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan have been added to the list with an IMDb rating above 7.9 and a minimum of 1000 votes. Bangladeshi movies have been added to the list on the basis of a minimum 8.2 IMDb rating and a minimum of 2000 votes. Indian movies have been included in the list on the basis of a minimum 8.2 IMDb rating and a minimum of 20000 votes.

Which do you think is the best movie in South Asia?

@Tsarstepan Okay. Then I guess I have to leave some movies from the list.

@CyrilMartin That's a great movie. The world-class performance of R. Madhavan & Vijay Sethupathi makes this movie one of the best.

I think there are films from Afghanistan, and some of them have been released all around the world and even won awards.

Some examples: Osama, The Patience Stone or Kabuli Kid they all receive money from other countries, but the director, plot and actors are Afghan.

They don't fit your rating parameters, but you could remove the reference to Afghanistan not making movies.

The concept is nice, but putting different criteria for different countries killed the purpose for me. And that too a random number of movies from each country.

May be you can keep a common criteria for rating 8 and 1000 Votes and include just top 3 or top 5 movies from each country.

This is what I feel, if others are happy I don't mind. :)

@Brijesh

Definitely some of the good movies will not make the list if we set universal rules for all countries. Some of the countries didn't have that many movies above 8.0 ratings. So, it will end up with just one or two countries.

Regarding your thoughts on keeping 1000 votes, it will also create some issues for some countries like India. India has several states and several movie industries to represents their movie. So, if you mention about just 1000 thousand votes, It will be challenging to select some movies from all states or industries. For India, popularity and number of votes should matter to create that list. If not, I have to put some movies on the list that most of us never heard about that before.

Definitely some of the good movies will not make the list if we set universal rules for all countries.

That is not how I thought. I was thinking to have just 1 parameter, so it doesn't look like an unfair comparison. My point was about explicitly stating different parameters because 8.0 with 10,000 votes is not same as 8.0 with 1,000 votes.

So, you could choose not to mention the criteria by saying that you picked top 3 or top 5 from each country. With minimum 1,000 votes, you would not get too obscure titles. This way you will have equal representation from each country. Currently you have Nepal - 2, Sri Lanka - 2, Pakistan - 3, Bangladesh - 9, India - 19. This makes it highly skewed towards India.

If you go this way you might have representation from other countries as well which you have excluded now. If think you need more from India, you could pick Hindi and non-Hindi separately, if you like.

Hope I am not rambling too much! At the end of the day, it's your poll. :)

If you decide to go the way I suggested, the result could still end up skewed towards Indian movies because of reasons. But, that would be voters deciding that rather than poll maker.

Shuvo, another suggestion. Instead of saying that movies from Afghanistan, Maldives and Buthan are not very popular, you can simply say that no film from those countries matched the parameters. That could avoid someone taking it the wrong way.

It could go:

The list is based on movies from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, as movies from Bhutan, Afghanistan, and Maldives didn't reach the rating/number of votes parameters.

@Pencho15 That's a great suggestion. I will take that for sure. That would definitely avoid someone taking it the wrong way. Thank you for your suggestion.

I'm not so into, because most of them don't get dubbed in German language. But I would have suggested Drishyam.
