Hannibal all the way, but if you mean the question more generally, I think picking two specific characters will skew the votes a lot.  Between Hannibal and Indiana Jones, most people may go for Indy, but there are so many villains that are way cooler, smarter, or more relatable than most heroes! (Think Moriarty, Khan, Dru, Megamind, Loki, etc.)

I don't know how you could bypass this problem off the top of my head, though. Maybe others will have ideas?

i thought the same exact thing about the photos...that's why i said 'in this case', referring to indy or lecter...i went with hero and indy...

had it been two others photos, i may have voted the other way...

good call laiath...

Hey Laiath,

It's tricky because I want to represent the Face-Off options with iconic characters to serve as archetypes for their respective categories - in this case, I picked a hero and villain in the top 2 of of AFI's Top 100 Heroes and Villains...

What I could do is maybe make a note in the introduction that asks people to NOT vote for their favorite character but to answer the question as stated.

Do you think that could fix some of the bias we think may occur?

that's very hard to say kyle...

besides the fact that most people ignore what the questions actually ask, and just go with their favorites anyway, the decision on what defines a 'villain' or 'hero' quite often can depend on who is playing them... (people even forget that hannibal lecter wasn't the villain in 'silence of the lambs'...it was buffalo bill...clarice went to hannibal for help to catch bill)...

if you like somebody, (like angelina jolie for example), who plays both good guys and bad guys, you may find her fascinating regardless on which side she is on...

and like in this case, i voted hero for indy...if you had a picture of tom cruise as the hero, it wouldn't have mattered who the villain was, i would have voted villain, because i can't stand tom cruise and don't see him as any kind of hero, even if he's supposed to be playing one...

so the 'fascination' factor i believe would depend on who the actor or actress is...

perhaps just have the words 'hero' and 'villain' where the pictures normally are...maybe that would clear up some of the question confusion...

Agreed! I'd vote Voldemort over HP any day because Ralph Fiennes :)

Kyle Perez, like rocky-o said, if you could find IMDb images that somehow show the words "HERO" and "VILLAIN", that would nicely do it.  You can even add them yourself if you can find the relevant images.

I think the time of archetypal villains and heroes is behind us, which is likely the very reason you are able to ask this face-off question.

Thank you Dan!! This marks my 100th IMDb Live Poll

My very first live poll (Most Influential Decade Defining Actor) went live all the way back in July 16, 2016 - almost an entire calendar year earlier. It took me exactly 364 days reach the 100 Live Polls milestone.

I'd like to take the time to thank a few people:

- The IMDb Poll Admins (you know who you are): For their loyalty to this incredible board and for always helping us with the best suggestions. Your cheerfulness and editing help always makes me happier.

- The IMDb Poll Authors (so many to name): You guys have become like a little family and I'm so grateful to have met everyone here who all share an affinity for film. For those who I've remained close with even once the switch to GS occurred, I'm grateful to have not lost a couple friends with the transition.

The IMDb Poll Editors: Every time a poll of your own is seen on the homepage, it really makes your day. It's great to get the recognition for some polls, whether it be on Facebook, Twitter or the IMDb Homepage.

- The IMDb Poll Voters: Without you guys, this probably wouldn't remain relevant within the site. I'm grateful we have almost a little 'cult' following.

- Dan: Your work on poll metrics and statistics is unparalleled and it's amazing to see your dedication with these polls. Your hardwork certainly never goes unnoticed.

Thank you for this great achievement!

Stay tuned, coming up: 200k votes!!!

Dan,

Any statistics on "contention" with this one? The voting seems to be as close as a previous heroes vs. villains Face-Off of mine (http://www.imdb.com/poll/N3NMlTvGoKk/results?ref_=po_sr).

Dan,

Thank you for providing that. I'm excited to learn more about all your stats, it really is interesting.

But the poll results you posted look like they're the results from another face-off of mine (those results are for the AFI poll of mine whereas the results for my "Hero vs. Villain" face-off are now tied at 294-294).

Did you mix up the two by chance when you pasted those results ^?
