Live Poll : Favorite Female Soldier

This list unveils a sad truth. Women, despite being portrayed more often, haven't got better written "military roles" in films in the last 80 years. An average viewer only has to notice the secondary roles played by actresses in Tom Cruise's recent films. You could even look beyond the "military" and find the exact same archetype in the Bourne films, the newer Bond films and the Mission Impossible films. I mean in this list, name me a single performance that approaches the depth of let's say Martin Sheen's Captain Benjamin L. Willard, Jean Martin's Colonel Mathieu, Jim Caviezel's Private Witt or  De Niro's Mike Vronsky.

Quality of the writing of female characters, despite Hollywood's effort to hide it, still suffers greatly... from stupid writers.

in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)

As I said, in the last 80 years, there is been practically no progress. For me, one of the last majors progresses was Deborah Kerr's role in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. Of course, her character isn't without a couple of clichés (it was in 1943.). But, it brings a truthful observation of women's importance in shifting role throughtout history upfront in an entertaining/playful fashion.

I'm not sure if Hanna Schmitz from The Reader should be considered. She was a guard in a concentration camp, not a soldier in battle, and for what I understand the SS guards were a paramilitary unit that was not an official part of the army.
