2 Live Polls: Black & White Horror Movies

Most early films were black and white but since the late 1960s, only a few mainstream films have been occasionally shot in black and white as an artistic choice.

While black and white horror films might not have the vibrant blood and guts but there is something to them that makes it as terrifying as anything made in color.

Which black and white movie released between xxxx to xxxx do you think was the scariest?

Note that some are only partly black and white. Especially, from the first list: Theater of Blood.

Thanks I have added a note to the lists. I got it filtered from advanced search. I am not sure how IMDb tags them as such.

In Theater of Blood only the title sequence is black and white, according to its page.

I quickly checked a few and Martin (1967) only has dream b & w sequences.

Would it be better to remove those options or I should make a special not on the title itself to indicate the same?

If I remove the options, it could probably end up with very fewer options. Though I might then adjust years and make it 2 instead of 3. Thoughts?

Brijesh, your note in the intro is probably sufficient, but perhaps you can remove Theater of Blood - if it's only seen in the title sequence, it hardly qualifies as a black & white movie.

Ok, perhaps I was thinking too much. Removed, thanks.

I agree it looks like there are many movies in the other two lists that most people probably wouldn't call black and white movies.

I have merged the 1981-2000 list into the other 2 lists, changed some criteria to add new options, removed color movies with less black and white scenes.

1961-1980

Eraserhead is the scariest, but What Ever Happened to Baby Jane is better

1981-2000

Haven't seen any

2001-2020

The Lighthouse is the best and the scariest that I have seen, but by experience, I know that Antichrist, House of 1000 Corpses, and The House that Jack Built are scarier.

For the 1961 -1980 list, I'd say 'Eraserhead' and 'Repulsion' are the scariest or at least most disturbing. They're both also very good, though not exactly enjoyable, lol.

May I suggest just two small edits to the intro?  (below in bold) The intro is very good, by the way. : )

Actually I didn't change it from an Idea to Praise as the thread still have 1 suggestion.

Is that ok?

Congratuations! :)

I didn't realize, that there are so many b&w horror movies. I'll vote and then take your list as an inspiration for my watchlist.
