3 LIVE POLLS: Female Combat Reporters, Commentators & Photographers in Film

Female Combat Reporters, Commentators & Photographers in Film

Over the past century, the body of work of award-winning front-line stories and images generated by women reporting from war zones has been impressive. Equally extraordinary, has been the roster of talented actresses that have portrayed their real-life and fictional counterparts on-screen in movies. The stories of these women, as they reported from conflicts around the globe, as well as, their intriguing backstories seem ready-made for the demands of a big screen biopic or drama. Still, some of the best and most famous women, who ever carried a notepad or camera into combat, have yet to have their stories cinematically told. It is no wonder that top actresses like Jennifer Lawrence, Rooney Mara, Hayley Atwell, Gemma Arterton, and Carey Mulligan, among others, have been linked to future film adaptations of the memoirs of some of these amazing  women.

Good subject. I went to see Lee.

The question seems a bit complicated in order to fit in everything. Maybe you should focus on women and real-life characters?

@Peter_pbn  An underdeveloped and underappreciated subgenre in film, with a fair amount of real-life characters, not even having a noteworthy documentary made about their lives, let alone a biopic. It took Kate Winslet eight years to make 'Lee' after dozens of failed attempts over the decades by others. It is notable since her story seems to have everything you want when developing a story into a biopic, yet Winslet could only get it off the ground and green lit as an independent film.

I removed the only actress to win an Oscar by playing either a combat reporter, commentator or photographer. Then, I split the answer pool and question along real-life depictions in documentaries, fictional characters and biographical characters. It left each subtopic with dozen or so answers for each answer pool.

Words of War won't be released until next year. Do you want to wait with the biographical list until then or remove the option?

@Jessica I removed 'Words of War' (2025) as an answer option. The poll suggestion, Biographical Female Combat Reporter, Commentator & Photographer Characters is more timely with 'Lee' (2024) now, than it will be in four months for the other biopic.
