2 LIVE POLLS: Which Actor Is the Pride of Ireland?

In 2020, the Irish Times took up the daunting task of compiling an all-time list of the best Irish film actors. They factored questions of star wattage, career longevity, national identity and weighted performance in film over television and theater. The final results yielded 50 undeniably great actors, 28 men and 22 women. While, one may nitpick about the actual order or the inclusion or exclusion of stars in the last few spots. The list is a solid snapshot in time and there is likely no better judge of the best Ireland has to offer. Source: The Irish Times

Richard Harris and Maureen O'Hara...

The question is actually tricky, that the actor who won the most Oscars in history (besides Jack Nicholson) is Irish would make him the Pride of the country from a totally objective perspective... but if the real subtext of the question is: which actor is the best ambassador of Ireland on the big screen? and if our appreciation is based on the actor's  instant evocativeness of Ireland in body and spirit (not on acting awards or statistics) then yeah, Richard Harris is the most Irish of all.

Maureen O'Hara is a no-contest to me...

@ElMaruecan82

I agree this topic is littered with dozen of details that are tricky. I was glad to avoid most of them and let the Irish Times make the call on who are Ireland's greatest actors and actresses. Plus, I prefer the "who is the pride of Ireland?" spin. Primarily, because it allows the poll taker to choose what is important or what combination makes them the best ambassador of Irish cinema.

In the actors list, in number 7, you are linking to a Brian Fitzgerald page instead of Barry Fitzgerald.

@Pencho15 Thanks,

Oddly, their IMDb numbers, nm0280187 and nm0280178 are as similar as their names.

Is almost as if they did it on purpose.

@urbanemovies ,

This sentence sounds awkward, even though it is probably grammatical.

In celebration of Saint Patrick's Day, which of these Irish actresses do you think is the pride of Ireland most?

Maybe this would sound better:

In celebration of Saint Patrick's Day, which of these Irish actresses do you think is the greatest pride of Ireland?

This also applies to your actor version of the poll.

@dan_dassow Thanks, I struggled with that one too. Pride doesn't seem like one of those thing that comes in degrees, rather either you have it or you don't. Here we are talking about a collective opinion, which I guess is different. When it is used, "most" seems to be used more with prideful and "greatest" more with pride. Corrected.

@urbanemovies ,

Thank you for making the update. I struggled for around half an hour to come up with a viable alternative to what your wrote.

Happy St. Patrick's Day Eve

Don't forget Patrick McGoohan... OK, TECHNICALLY he was born in New York, but his parents moved back to Ireland before he was even a year old.

Alas, once he left England for the US he got fewer "meaty" roles, though he did win two Emmy's for his work on COLUMBO.
