In Progress

Language addition urgently needed

I was gonna add some multi-award winner films with Luganda language but you don't have that language in options.

Please add this language: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luganda

If you need a movie example, I can give this one that's already on site but can't add the language of course: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2569328/

There are more already on site, and the ones I'm planning to add as well.

Waiting for a solution, thanks.

Shipibo is not currently one of the languages that IMDb covers:
http://www.imdb.com/language/

According to Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipibo_language
Shipibo (also Shipibo-Conibo, Shipibo-Konibo) is a Panoan language spoken in Peru and Brazil by approximately 26,000 speakers. Shipibo is an official language of Peru.
There are at least two films on IMDb in which Shipibo is used.
I'm Still (2013) "Sigo siendo" (original title)
The summary says: "A trip through the diversity of black and native Peruvian music."

2014 documentary "Icaros".   The summary says:  "Icaros explores the spiritual universe of the Shipibo indigenous people ...."  On IMDb the film's language is currently listed as "Aboriginal".

For additional background, please reference these two threads:

The original request by G.S. Reis (the last link in Dan's post above) dates back to May 2014, and the other discussion in January 2015 led Dan to post this Idea thread.

Can we get a rough estimate from staff as to how many more years we may have to wait for the requested language to be added to the database?

I see the two films in the OP still haven't got this language listed and the language also can't be selected in the language drop-down menu, so I figured a bump might be a good idea.

Also, can someone perhaps change the tag of this thread? The tag Idea doesn't seem to help. Perhaps the tag Question or Problem will do some good.

I've requested that this language be added to the database. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Thanks Grayson. Hopefully, it won't take another six years for it will actually be added to the database. :)

Am I correct in saying that it hasn't been added yet?

Hey - the language hasn't been added but I have checked the task queue for the team that does this and it will be done. I'm sorry I can't offer any sort of timescale for it at the moment, and it's not a simple process so it can take a long time.

I am thankful for the update, but it does seem rather weird to me that the language Shipibo was first asked for in January 2015 and still hasn't been added to the database while the language Mixtec was asked for in November 2018 and was added in May 2019 (see https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/add-mixtec-language-for-roma-2018/5f4a79fb8815453dba943376 ).

The popularity of the movie Roma may explain the quick incorporation of the Mixtec language.

That may be the case, but without a response from a staff member, we won't know for sure...

The language Shipibo has been added to the dropdown menu on the search page (https://www.imdb.com/search/title/ ), but it's not (yet) possible to add it to a specific title....

Bump.

Just a bump for it has been mentioned in another thread. Also, IMDb is a database and hasn't been able to add this language properly for over eight years, so even though it won't help, there's nothing wrong with a bump.

Hi @Marco -

Thanks for the bump on this older language request, I have inquired on the status with the appropriate team, as soon a I have an update I will relay that information here.

@Michelle Thanks. Hopefully it'll become easier in the future to add a new language. This is taking eight years and counting, that can't be right.

Thanks for your request.

I can confirm that a new language request has been made to our technical team. We are unable to advise on the timeline for this request. Once we hear back then we will update you here.

Thanks for your patience.

@Rida "We are unable to advise on the timeline for this request."

We (long-time contributors) are not surprised: https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/please-add-the-shipibo-language-to-the-database/5f4a7ae28815453dbabfa6bc

This drama was produced in the Gullah Geechee Nation, an autonomous country (since 2000) of several islands off the coast of the southeastern United States (from North Carolina to Florida). The movie is in the Gullah (Geechee) language. The filmmaker is herself Gullah.

You don't have this country or language in the drop-down menus. Please add "Gullah" to both categories, so this movie listing on IMDb can be corrected.

The name "Gullah" is preferred over "Geechee" as the more modern name for the language, the people, the culture, and the nation, though "Geechee" is still often used and accepted, even officially.

This movie produced in Ghana is in the language Kusaal, a Mabia (Gur) language. Please add Kusaal to your language list so the proper language can be assigned to this film.

You should also add "Mabia languages" (the more scholarly name) or "Gur languages" (the more colloquial name) to cover other films that use any of the 70 languages in that group, spoken in west Africa. Or maybe "Mabia (Gur) languages".

The native Kalahari Bushmen (also known as the San people) who appear in one scene of this movie are speaking their tribal language, which is in a family of languages known as Khoesan, spoken by the Bushmen in the Kalahari desert and surrounding savanna region of southern Africa.

You don't have this language (family) in the list to choose. There are other movies with the Kalahari Bushmen, particularly documentaries, that need to correctly list this language family.

Please add "Khoesan languages" (or if you prefer to spell it the more scientifically pronounced "Khoisaan").

Tembele (2022), Uganda's submission for the 2023 International Feature Oscar, is in Swahili, Nyankole, and Luganda, according to the director. However, I could not add the latter two. I was especially surprised to find Luganda, the most widely spoken language in Uganda with millions of speakers, wasn't available. The name for Nyankole seems to vary a lot, with alternatives including "Nyankore", "Runyankole", "Runyankore", and "Nkore", but "Nyankole" is the one used by the Library of Congress and SIL. (These sources give "Ganda" for the other language, but "Luganda" is more common as far as I can tell.) Please make them available.

I was especially surprised to find Luganda, the most widely spoken language in Uganda with millions of speakers, wasn't available.

It appears there is a ticket for it already for a year: https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/language-addition-urgently-needed/61691cb5203b6a57f4141389

This language was requested later, and was added within 6 months: https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/please-add-oromo-as-a-language-option/61e4f20b9ae52c4a67501659

I wonder how they decide what to add and what to wait for years.

Hi nardog-

I have merged to this conversation as @mbmb is right. The request is still in progress and I have called out to our team in charge.

Cheers!

@Bethanny As I wrote here, my request was for two languages, and this is for only one of them, so the merger doesn't make sense. Also note I didn't receive any notification for the merger or your reply.

@Bethanny Just a FYI: There are more languages waiting to be added. The most obvious example because of the almost eight (!) years it has been in the waiting room is Shipibo: https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/please-add-the-shipibo-language-to-the-database/5f4a7ae28815453dbabfa6bc

My problem Add Nyankole and Luganda languages for Tembele, an Oscar submission was merged Language addition urgently needed, which is only about Luganda. My problem was about not just Luganda but Nyankole as well. The merger doesn't make sense.
