IMDb Name Page Redesign

IMDb Name Page Redesign

Image

We are excited to announce the launch of IMDb’s redesigned Name pages! These pages are meant to make your IMDb experience easier and more enjoyable by providing better access to photos and videos, an upgraded view of an individual’s credits, and improved mobile navigation making it easier to view IMDb features on the go. These enhancements reflect changes suggested by IMDb customers, as well as our own in-depth research designed to enhance entertainment content, discovery, and navigation. More information is available in the FAQ on the help page.

We hope you enjoy these latest improvements, and thank you for continuing to make IMDb the world’s most trusted source for movie, TV, and entertainment content.

My topic was closed and merged with some other thread, but I couldn't find a way to respond to Col Needham. And I couldn't find the posts made in the original thread, probably because this forum is a huge mess and is very unhandy to work with. But anyway, I don't think it should have been merged, since the issue that I'm describing is about overall slowness of IMDB, not so much about the new design in terms of looks.

@ Col_Needham

We are happy with the choices we have made with the new technology platform. We track a full suite of performance measurements, including LCP, and the pages are already faster for most customers compared to the old pages.  As we noted in one of the later posts around the launch of the new name pages.

Perhaps there's something wrong with the way you guys are tracking stuff, perhaps it's not based on real life? I'm sure if you load IMDB from the intranet with speedy machines, you might not notice the shortcomings.

While I know for a fact that I get to see this problem on many PC's, also from friends and family, with adblocking disabled. You must not forget, you will literally see the three loading dots displayed when IMDB is busy loading stuff. The old IMDB was way faster to load because it didn't have all of the extra JavaScript bloat.

Note the point emphasized in bold on client-side rendering which may address your issue once we are able to activate it.

Can you tell me a bit more about this ''client-side rendering'' stuff? So this hasn't been implemented yet? And what is it supposed to do?

Actually, both my Editor and Producer credits say this on my page. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2566086/
Can someone tell me how to fix this or even just report it to tech support? Thanks

I see that too - not seen it before. If you click on 'update filter selections' a dialog pops up. Make any change then change it back and the credits show up (at least when I do it).

I wonder if it's been fixed, because I see credits in the normal way on your page.

Or maybe it's browser dependent.

I'm using a Chromebook with Chrome 110.

I would like to be able to select an actor/actress and sort their movies to see if they appear within my Watchlist.  This sort feature was available before IMDB redesigned its website.

@SamLaCroix Yes, this is still possible.  All of the links to other views are still available.  In this case, you would click the “All topics” link in the upper right of the name page to open the menu.  In the “Credits” column of the menu, click “by Year” and on the resulting page, use the “Refine” menu at the top — within the “You and This List” section there’s a checkbox labelled “In Watchlist” just as there was before.

Hope this helps.

@Col_Needham Thank you!  That's exactly what I wanted.

How can we see all movie and TV credits associated with a name?

For example, America's Best Dance Crew does not appear as a credit on the Lil Mama profile page but she appears as a cast member on the program page.  I’ve noticed similar gaps for other names and TV shows or movies.

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2674657/

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1145872/reference

Thanks

Since the November 2022 IMDb Name Page Redesign, I noticed that the Self credits disappeared on many people pages.  For instance, if they appeared on a talk show as a guest, on a reality show as a judge or in historical video, those credit acknowledgements no longer appear on their IMDb page.

For example, America's Best Dance Crew does not appear as a credit on the Lil Mama profile page but she appears as a cast member on the program page.

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2674657/

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1145872/reference

It makes the Name Pages incomplete and I miss that information.  I’ve discovered unknown other places to see my favorites.

Thanks

@devans00 The credits are all still available — in cases where the person has a large number of credit sections, you may need to scroll along the category row to select it, as here on Lil Mama’s page:

Alternatively for speedy access to all credits, unselect the three default categories as covered in the FAQ -> https://help.imdb.com/article/issues/GMWASETVPLJYXEZE/

Hope this helps.

When searching for an actor, the list of their movies now does not show the ratings, you have to click on the 'info' button. Why was it deemed an improvement to hide that information away? Surely getting that info at a glance was better?

@typomitch Thanks for the feedback.  Beyond the exception in the next paragraph, the name pages on the site have never included the ratings in the main filmography so nothing has been removed here.  It sounds like you might be looking for the "by Rating" view -- please click the "All topics" menu in the upper right of any name page, and then in the "Credits" column, select the "by Rating" link (or actually any link in that column includes both personal and overall ratings information).  For example, https://www.imdb.com/filmosearch/?sort=user_rating&explore=title_type&role=nm0428065

We did briefly have a beta version of the name pages last summer which included the ratings in the filmography view, but this was apparently too much of a change for many people to handle and customers asked them to be removed.  Personally I loved this feature and I hope we can bring it back at some point in the future.

@Col_Needham Thanks for your reply. I may be simply remembering the app version of the site and getting my wires crossed. I just like the ability to quickly glance at all an actors movie scores without further clicks, which does appear to be a mobile feature.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or I'm missing something here, I added the first acting credit of this page: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm9737833/

And acting category says "Credits excluded. Update filter selections.". No idea why.

I think this also happened on another page I added first credit of a category but I can't remember the name of that one now.

Please revise the standard Name page settings AWAY from the default 3-or-less categories "selected" to display. This makes it look as if everyone / anyone on IMDb has only worked in at most 3 categories. The default view should be to show ALL categories containing credits, and users could then be able de-select whichever job categories they do not want to see. Literally every name page I land on, I have to go through the process of scrolling (too far) down the page to find credits, de-selecting all pre-selected groups (Click, Click, Click) which releases all categories to be shown, and then I have to click Collapse Below in order to see a full list of credits by category. I don't know what kind of dumbed-down version of the internet the IMDb Gods decided they had to offer the public, but I thought IMDb has always been about delivering full and accurate information, not some algorithmically truncated slice of the pie. Truly hoping the Powers That Be here give us back the full strength of this database sometime soon. In the meantime, I will keep perusing the various competitor sites to see if anyone else gets it right first.

The Personal Details section on name pages includes birth dates, but the edit link next to it leads to a selection of data types that doesn't include birth date.

In "Known for" and on IMDbPro, occupations with company names of the type "visual effects editor: RISE" are displayed as "visual effects editor (RISE)".

Perhaps that is why I am starting to see more examples of the company being entered as an attribute instead of in the occupation field.

(Not sure if this has been discussed among the 16 pages of posts here.)

Why is the attribute (uncredited) not visible on the primary page? You can see it when clicking on the info (i) icon, but why not include it up front?

Here are 2 presentations of an extreme example:

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0868177/

versus

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0868177/fullcredits

@Peter_pbn & @bderoes This is indeed a bug, sorry (this page was fine back in June -> https://web.archive.org/web/20230606111311/https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0868177/).  We have opened a ticket with the appropriate team (ticket reference #D911299480).

@Peter_pbn & @bderoes

I much prefer to view the Full Credits (text only) page as the default Name Page.  Mainly because I don’t always know which title a person is given credit when they have multiple roles associated with a project.

Is there a link to that page or do you have to manually add /fullcredits at the end of every Name Page url?

@Col_Needham, any thoughts or suggestions?

@devans00

There are links ("All credits") in the All Topics menu and also under Credits if you click on the blue filter button.

Thanks @Peter_pbn

@devans00 from earlier in this thread …

Taken from a longer update here, for those people seeking a quick route to view all credits, please see the "All credits" link in the "All topics" menu as shown in this screen-grab (see red highlight to activate the menu and yellow highlight to access the all credits link):

Why doesn't the "All topics" button show up on series-type title pages?

@jeorj_euler This is the thread for the /name/ page redesign, but please provide the URL of an example “series-type title page” and we will attempt to answer.

I can infer from that the feature is supposed to show up, Col. So, upon further investigation, I see that the widget glyph corresponding "All topics" is there but the actual words "All topics" isn't. Due to the "night mode" setting of the particular browser that I was using, some components of web pages are completely invisible to me. Still, this begs the question of why the meaning of the glyph isn't expressed. Is there not enough screen space for it?

@Col_Needham “people seeking a quick route to view all credits, please see the "All credits" link in the "All topics" menu as shown in this screen-grab”

Thanks C. Very helpful.

Hi, I recently had my first additional crew credit and it's coming up as

'Credits excluded. Update filter selections.'

And I want to fix it so it can be seen- how do I do this?

this is my page here: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm14001223/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_1_nm_7_q_Amie%2520Page

@amieeeA4 ... and indeed it did clear-up, plus we are launching a longer-term fix today to reduce the chances of this happening again.

Most of my ratings of titles vanish after returning to the name page using the browser's Back feature (back mouse button) at this page in the Actor section:

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000354/

Initial "text-align: center;">

After returning from a title I had not rated:
Similar results from this page:
Using Chrome 115 on Windows 11.
Also happens to the same 2 titles with the coloring extension turned off.

@bderoes Thanks for the problem report.  We can reproduce the same issue.  This is a new experimental treatment to re-include the votes again (as in the 2022 beta).  We have opened a ticket with the appropriate team (reference #P95913939).

I think this is a glitch but name pages no longer display uncredited status. The title pages indicate whether an actor or crew member was uncredited but their name pages no longer do so. I would like to think this was not intentional and will need fixing.

This is TERRIBLE! I can’t believe that imdb thinks it is a good idea to summarize people’s credits! When foreign film folks apply for a US artist visa (O1), visa officers look at our imdb pages! They need to see all credits at once without digging through to find them. Do you know why? BECAUSE THEY WON’T! They don’t know that some of the credits are hidden and they need to filter things. They’re not gonna know how to navigate it and they’ll reject applications or ask for more evidence. It took ME several correspondences with the customer service to find my hidden credits and I have been on imdb for years, how are the officers gonna even try to figure out this “new” feature?!!! Do you know how many visa applications you’re going to ruin and how much time and money you’re gonna cost to visa applicants! DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY DREAMS YOU’RE GONNA CRUSH?!!!! This is terrible, terrible terrible terrible… This is “I’m expecting lawsuits” level terrible…

Another thing is that the transition is happening so slowly that the transition to the next generation will be happening right shortly after the previous generation is completely eliminated, say, four years from now, and then there will just be even more JavaScript bloat and probably some new digital rights managment concoction, ¿HTML5.1?, or whatever Google (the Source) decides to force into the Chromium engine that so many Web browsers use, maybe some non-fungible token nonsense.
