Suggestion: Favorite Movie Heroine of 2024 (Requesting suggestions)

[Poll and Intro Under Construction]

Hi, I included a few characters from movies that I haven't seen. Although I did some research, it still makes me nervous so if you've seen Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Wicked, Furiosa, Moana 2, or Challengers, please let me know if you don't think the included characters are heroines or if any of those movies are particularly misogynist. Thank you!

Let's support films with women and girls so the movie industry moves towards more equality. We can start by celebrating these female protagonists: which of these heroines from 2024 is your favorite?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls590304595/

Copy List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls590304595/copy

Poll: TBD

@rubyfruit76

Personally, I would include Emilia from Emilia Perez although I greatly disliked the film.

I would also include Sienna from Terrifier 3.

Thanks, @Maxence_G ! I added Emilia. I'm torn about Sienna. From what I've read, the character seems to fit but the movie not so much, perhaps? I'll read more, though. Thanks for the suggestions! : )

Oh, do you think I should add any of the other characters from Emilia Perez if I have room? I'll probably see the movie but i'm not sure when.

Do you think you could put Vi from Arcane S2 in there too ?

@AlexEros I'd love to but unfortunately I usually barely have enough room for characters from movies so I couldn't fit TV characters, as well. That's a good idea for a poll, though, (TV Heroines from 2024) if you want to do it. : )

@rubyfruit76 Of the films you mention above I have only seen Furiosa so far, but I don't think there's any problem with her being included.

FYC:

Out of the 2024 films I've seen so far I could suggest

Shirley Chisholm from Shirley - Biopic on the first U.S. woman to run for President

Emily Maitlis from Scoop - Reporter helping expose Prince Andrew friendship with Jeffrey Epstein (nominated as TV movie at the Emmys, so I don't know if you want to include those, it is a feature film accoring to the IMDb)

Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - Popular film and sequel to the 1988 film, she faces against the ghost with the most to save her daughter.

Lady Raven from Trap - Shyamalan let his daughter shine in the film so her character plays a very important role as a heroine.

Roxanne Hall from The Union - Just an action comedy so probably should not be a priority, but she is the main secret agent in this adventure and helps save the secret identity of moles all around the world.

These are great, @Pencho15! I've seen two of them so I'm not sure how I forgot them but thank you for reminding me -- and to remind me to continue to watch 'Scoop,' which I started but was interrupted. Oh and I remember I was really looking forward to seeing 'Shirley' but I can't recall it coming out so thanks for that, as well. : ) They're perfect for this list; I added all five.

@rubyfruit76 ,

For your consideration:

Cabrini (Cristiana Dell'Anna) in Cabrini (2024)

After witnessing disease and poverty in the slums of New York, Italian immigrant Francesca Cabrini embarks on a daring journey to persuade the hostile mayor to provide housing and healthcare for hundreds of orphaned children.

IMHO, I think these not listed popular and well-seen movies with female characters or character groups should be in the conversation. I have seen them all and think the characters perform heroic acts and are strong female protagonists.

The subject matter / plot of Blink Twice and The First Omen I don't think precludes their inclusion, as I think the female characters in the end prevails in both and they handle the situation admirably (or as well as can be expected). But, you may disagree.

@urbanemovies Thank you, so much, for these suggestions. I haven't seen any of these films and in fact, hadn't even heard of several, including the two you mentioned ('Blink Twice' and 'First Omen'), which points to the reason why I requested suggestions: I tend not to know a lot of big budget and/or popular movies, at least before they land in a streaming service that I have, so I figured that I'd have knowledge gaps.  Speaking of those two movies, may I ask why you highlight those two? I haven't read up on 'Blink Twice' at all, although the fact that Zoe Kravitz directed and co-wrote it tends to make me think that it wouldn't be misogynist. As for 'The First Omen,' I read a persuasive article that posits that the movie is a feminist take on the story. I also read a post that argued quite the opposite but, unlike the article, it was not at all convincing, and those were all I found on that particular subject. Since I didn't see either, I'm wondering if something about them gave you pause or just the opposite: I trust your judgement. Thanks again! : )

@urbanemovies  p.s.: I've added a few and will return to this after I get some sleep. I kept making typos, which is usually a good sign that I need some sleep. Well, that and it's 2:30 am, lol.

@rubyfruit76, I think the subject matter in these three films is controversial, but how the women handle the situations in these films goes against being portrayed as helpless victims and instead shows their courage, strength and heroism under extreme circumstances. The explanation has spoilers, so you may want to "kick the can" on a decision until you get a full pool from the other options. I don't think that the two are "must add", just worthy of discussion and notable due to their number of IMDb votes. I would ballpark them @ roughly in the 20 to 40 range out of the 50 options, based on ranking them in terms of popularity, quality and strength in fitting the question's scope.

The First Omen  involves a conspiracy within the church, desperate to regain power against the rise of secularism, it seeks to bring about the birth of the Antichrist to create fear and drive people back to the Church. This plan includes the forceful impregnation of an aspiring nun, Margaret in a satanic ritual (the night she was drugged and blacked out at the disco). Margaret uncovers the conspiracy, fights to protect an orphan named Carlita and attempts to thwart the conspirators and their plan at numerous turns.

- Blink Twice involves multiple women being drugged, sexually assualted and having their memories wiped of the assaults on a tropical island, but two women discover the deception and end up turning the tables on their perpetrators.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14858658/mediaviewer/rm2236445953/?ref_=ttmi_mi_all_1/

- Being Maria a biopic about actress Maria-Hélène Schneider, "...best known for co-starring opposite Marlon Brando in the controversial Last Tango in Paris (1972), which was noted for its graphic sexuality. Schneider later revealed she was not informed about a simulated rape until moments before it was filmed, an event she described as traumatic and humiliating. The film documents Maria Schneider's rise to fame after "Last Tango in Paris" and the controversial production's impact on her life and career. Although Michelangelo Antonioni's The Passenger (1975) showcased her abilities, a reputation for walking out of films during production resulted in her becoming unwelcome in the industry. However, she re-established stability in her personal and professional life in the early 1980s,..." She goes from victim to championing equality and improving the conditions actresses worked in over the remainder of her life.

Elodie in 'Damsel' is a must add as a feminist fairy tale. The main protagonist, supporting protagonists and main antagonist are all female, the title is even an allusion to the fact the female heroes are not damsels-in-distress and pokes fun at the moniker. In fact, the all the male characters play secondary characters in the film.

Swimming English Channel 2024 Biopics

Young Woman and the Sea (2024) is the best choice of the two, IMHO.

Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle* in Young Woman and the Sea (2024)

Trudy Ederle, the first woman and first American woman to swim the English Channel, despite a childhood illness that barred her from swimming as a youth, battling sexism at every turn and overcoming being sabotaged by her own coach.

Mercedes Gleitze* in Vindication Swim (2024)

Mercedes Gleitz, the first British woman to swim the English Channel and her battle against both the cold waters of the Channel and the oppressive society of 1920s England.

IMHO, these are the strongest options from the fifteen unlisted and twenty-five listed options in this post. You may want to list multiple options from the same movie as a single answer option to stretch the total number of options listed (ie Louise and Agnes from Speak No Evil (2024)).

To Be Added Must List Options (IMHO)

Kate in Twisters (2024), Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle* in Young Woman and the Sea (2024), and Eloide in Damsel (2024)

Already Listed Must List Options (IMHO)

Rain in Alien: Romulus (2024), Fransesca Cabrini* in Cabrini (2024), Furiosa from Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024), Lee Miller* from Lee (2023), and Samira from A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)

@urbanemovies  Thanks for this; it was very helpful. And yes, absolutely, multiple characters from the same movie will definitely be consolidated into one entry per film: Louise & Agnes from 'Speak No Evil' are just there because I'm waiting on a photo of both of them that I submitted and if it's not accepted, I'll make a choice between the bad photo of both characters and the much better photo of only one. I'd rather include both of them but so far that's the only photo of the two characters and it's an awful pic. I often leave notes and the like on my lists for my own purposes until the list is complete and then I clean it all up. : )

Here are some other not yet mentioned worthy heroine options in movies with between 5k and 25k in IMDb votes that I think should be in the discussion, even though they are not as well-seen yet. There are probably about two dozen in that vote range when you include all the other suggestions made in this thread.

I think you have a solid answer pool of about 40-50 total options now (from a pool of 315 2024 movies that have accumulated 5,000 or more IMDb votes) and can pare it down to the best 35. I would check the movie plots on Wikipedia to help you decide which to include or exclude from the final list based on your own criteria. I don't see any obvious bad choices from any of the suggestions that have been made on this post. I do see there are as many great 2024 heroine movies under 25,000 IMDb votes, as there are in 2024 heroine movies above 25,000 IMDb votes. So, using plot focused criteria to cull the list further will probably yield the best assortment of heroine choices.

I would advocate for including a Civil War (2024) female heroine option in the final answer pool. It is the biggest streaming hit of the year and the 4th most IMDb voted movie of the year. The film has notable stars with Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny in lead roles and has Sonoya Mizuno in a minor supporting role. Unfortunately, even though they share a scene together, there is no single image of all three together in the same frame. All three are war journalists, with the two lead characters being war photographers and the other supporting character is a war reporter. You could list all three characters,  or list just the two main characters, or list them individually (least desirable option). I also advocate for Kate from Twisters (2024) and the all-female superhero team from Madame Web (2024) by virtue of answer options being Top 25 IMDb-voted 2024 movies and having strong heroines. https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature,tv_movie,video&release_date=2024-01-01,2024-12-31&sort=num_votes,desc
