Live Poll: Black History Movies

February is Black History Month and the movies below chart several Black experiences over the past few hundred years. All of the films are either based on true stories or are documentaries. Which movie do you think illustrates a piece of Black history most powerfully?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls089103947/

Poll:

Even though the list already has 35, please feel free to make suggestions. One criterion: every movie must have at least one Black lead. (Movies like (the quite good) 'Mississippi Burning,' therefore, don't qualify.)

Ruby,

Thank you for creating this poll. There are many amazing films on this list, so it is hard to choose.

My vote:

Thanks for the suggestions. 'The Help' is not based on a true story, though.

I was thinking about suggesting this one too. It may be partly fictional, but the situation and the people are real.

The situation is real? The four of them actually met as a group?

Oh wow, I just looked it up and they did actually meet. That makes me like the film even less than I did when I thought it was completely fictionalized. I knew that Ali and Malcolm X had a relationship but I had no idea that the four of them were friends. I'll add it.

Thanks for the suggestion!

...Yikes, if I can decide on what to remove, which so far has been exceedingly difficult. I'm asking the questions what was less consequential and what is under-represented or over-represented.

Why didn't you like it?

I recently watched Ali, and it also has a small scene with the four characters meeting at the start of the film.

I wouldn't say that I didn't like it at all but I just didn't like it nearly as much as I was expecting that I would. I thought it descended into cliches and easy answers at times and also relied on binaries too much, especially with its portrayal of Sam Cooke and the relationship between Cooke and Malcolm X. I just thought that there was a lack of nuance and I didn't feel like it challenged me at all, which, among other things, made it feel rather dull to me.  I think I'll watch it again, though, and maybe see things in it that I didn't see the first time. I respect Regina King a lot and think that she's a great actor who makes great choices in the roles that she takes so perhaps I need to take a second look. I suspect that she saw something in the script that I'm missing.

That, by the way, has little to nothing to do with why I haven't found a place for it on the list yet.

What did you think about it?

It was good, but not among my favorites. It was mostly informative rather than challenging to Me, I didn't knew Sam Cooke or Jim Brown before watching the movie, so as someone from another country it was esentially interesting to learn new pieces of history from the US.

I don't think it stands to the greatest movies about black history, but it is worth watching and a good nominee for the awards. But I don't think it should be the winner.

How about Green Book an excellent film rated 8.2 on imdb & based on true story, brilliant acting by both leads.

Thanks for the post. Really amazing for black history movies. Because they play an important role in developing historical insights for the coming generations. There are also many documentary films and videos are available for black activists like here.
