Live Poll: The Most Memorable Female Villain

Intro:

Since film business established in society as a cultural achievement, there were many bad male villains to push a story forward with shockingly bad deeds and conspiracies. Since some time women also lost their innocence on screen and rushed up the mountain of malignancy. Some of them did very well.

Which of these actresses performed the evil, mean, devious, despicable, malignant, or brutal character the best?

Report us here.

Suggestions:

Please only the meanest female villains you have seen in movies. No TV-Series, no animated movies, documentations. Please just movies rated above 5.5/10 with at least 40.000 ratings. No rape-and-revenge-movie-victims to keep the idea more diverse. Heading for 25 options.

Ok, seven of your suggestions are on the list. It took a little time, because of a lack of time. ;) So the list is full. I must admit that I'm not really happy with the last two on the list. If there are better ones, I will change them. Thank you for suggesting. ;) Anyway Lori is a great female villain. I was totally stunned when I first got how bad she is. Sharon Stone is great. Same for Elsa.

Than you, Mario. But I got two better ones. Lady Macbeth and Elle Driver. The movies are also rated higher. But maybe you got THE female villain for me. Unforgettable for all times. There are still places, I would change, if there is a better one. Hennessey and Vulnavia are very good ones. Hennessey is extortive to be bone and Vulnavia is a very classic female villain.

I forgot one special I added now. Glenn Close in 'Dangerous Liaisons'. She shouldn't be left out.

When I consider it, Vulnavia was more like the servant of a villain, Dr. Phibes. It was tempting because of her bizarre behavior. But when I think of it, I also wouldn't put Magenta from 'the Rocky Horror Picture Show' as a villain, because she also wouldn't fit. She has no relation to the victims, like Elsa and the betrayed Indiana Jones. But I would put in Maria Ruskin instead. She had a clear object in the game. And she is very shifty.

With Mario's suggestions 25 options reached. New candidates only if there are better ones.

If there are no better suggestions, I declare it as ready to go.

Thank you, Mario. I'll make an exception and take Allex Forrest on the list, so it's 26 options. She really shouldn't be left out.

Since some time women also lost their innocence on screen and rushed up the mountain of malignancy.

Women have been villains ever since stories were told and movies were made, it's interesting that AFI's Top 10 Heroes counts only 2 heroines, while 6 out of AFI's Top 10 Villains are female.

The idea is good and has been explored in previous polls, I just think it would be unfair to consider that "female villains" is a recent phenomenon...

I didn't say it's a recent phenomenon. When it comes to movies, I may not think in years, but decades. So "since some times" can even be 50, 60 70 years - it depends on the content. Why do think I was about to put Vulnavia on the list? Dr. Phibes is 50 years old. "Since some time" was a little metaphor to the downfall  of the patriarchay, which started decades ago - but many still don't get. Sixty years ago, women often were still nice house wifes who wouldn't be self-determined in most movies. The real emacipation came with the pill. And showing real mean female villains to a wide and accepting audience came later. But earlier female villains are allowed, too. They might be even more memorable, if iconic. I must admit that I don't know so many from 60's and earlier. Salome, perhaps? ;)

Please correct #22 Marion Cotillard and #25 Melanie Griffith

Also, "report us" in the discussion link doesn't really make sense. Did you maybe mean "Report it to us"?

Thank you, Jessica. I tried a funny line, but failed by German language habits. ;)

I changed it to "Discuss it here". The options are corrected.

Hi Breu!

'Good poll. May I suggest two small edits?

Since then, some times women also lost their innocence on screen and rushed up the mountain of malignancy.

(It's good to see you in cyberspace again. : ) You were away for a while and then came back and then I was away for a while so it seems like a long time.)

I left three classic villains suggestions above which I don't know if you saw, they can be added in a repush if you like.

way too late, but what about Angela Lansbury in Manchurian Candidate

@lbezviner

I would add it and ask for a re-push, but it's questionable if it would gain an adequate amount of votes.

Oh, and I was almost blaming myself for not suggesting the female villains from the AFI list... I just realized I did talk about AFI in that thread. Mrs. Iselin isn't just one of the most memorable female villains but she's a memorable villain period... and she's one of the female villains who made it in AFI Top 50.

I realize that I'm in a minority but it's just that I've been using AFI lists ever since I started making polls...

I guess this was an appeal to put her on the list and re-push?

I really figured it was too late for that but I wanted to add her to the conversation. I saw that movie shortly after it came out [yeah I'm that old] and it blew me away that mommie dearest [long before she murder wrote] was so evil. She's on that list for a reason.

I'll do, but I wonder, if she will collect many votes after such a long time. Maybe she'll get some votes over a longer time period. I've put her on the list. I'll ask for a re-push. Let's look at it again in about three month or half a year.

I'm sorry for not linking the character, but at the moment I can't click the characters. The technical problem is known and they work on it. Maybe you write the link here, then I can add it.

After fixing the leak with a critical system update of Microsoft, I can access the characters again.

I wondered the last days how strange my PC acted, sometimes.

No matter how many crimes she solved as Jessica Fletcher, or how lovingly she sang in Beauty and the Beast, thinking of Ms. Lansbury brings an instant chill to the bones from Manchurian Candidate. That hasn't diminished in 50 years.
