Live Poll: The Horrible Side of Hollywood

Intro:

The big dream factory got a lot of high lights, but also deep shadows. According to celebrity press worldwide there always were different problems the people in - or behind - the spotlight had to cope with. Addictions, divorces, accidents - no matter what they have or had to cope with, there are always leaks to a wide audience about it.

Which of these problems seems to be the worst side of Hollywood?

Tell us here.

Suggestions:

This is an image poll. If you suggest an option, please do it with an image of a movie which shows the problem. And please name the problem shortly like in the examples.

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls084887909/

Poll: TBD

I have made a different poll but with the exact same title, so I guess you should consider choosing a different one.

Sexual harassment is a ... singular concept. Not a political statement but a grammatical one.

The same thing with alcohol abuse and drug addiction. Please lose the plural side from the nouns (text wise from these options).

And aesthetically, umm... that one image? That's far too graphic. Can you please change drug abuse image to something else? You will likely get some serious blowback on how physically disgusting it is. I wouldn't be surprised to see not being chosen as a poll simply for that single image.

Btw: It's wrong to show drug abuse aesthetically; like a commercial. But ok.

The polls for IMDb aren't rated PG-13 or higher. I'm not condoning drug use and disappointed if that was your take on my criticism. Just any other not-so-graphic depiction of drug use will be sufficient to convey the point (okay maybe nothing from the reboot of Judge Dred or other fantasy drugs like Limitless).

Many adults even have physiological reactions to overly graphic and squeamish imagery. And this poll is setting them up like a pretty gross trap ready to spring on unsuspecting eyes (of many ages and sensibilities).

I just wanted to emphasize that images about dangerous drug abuse like heroin or meth can't be drastically enough. That's why they print images of cancer on cigarette packs. And I adore Aronofsky for using drastically images for that kind of drug abuse. But I also understand that those images can be too much for someone. So I changed it. I guess it's ok now?

I guess there is not much more to suggest. When there are no more suggestions, I would consider this one as ready to go. If there are problems with the form or typos, I will correct it. If not, then it can go live.

Thank you for diggin' up that images. I think the image I used is better.

The main problem is, that the images are pretty small in polls. And the images you linked have one problem. When small, everybody just sees an ugly guy that looks dumb and in the second picture just the nurse. That's from the square format the images will converted to. Try it yourself. Take the two pictures on a blank list and you will get what I mean.

The image of Looker has more meaning, because there is a guy, holding the face of a beautiful women. That gesture is enough in context with the text. Especially then when many people remember on Looker, which was awful in many ways, but interesting in other ways.

The worst side of Hollywood for me is the death of creativity... tired of moneymaking sequels, reboots, live-action remakes...

Hi, ElMo. I've put your suggestion on the list. Thank you for contributing.

Just about politics - can you tell a little more, please. Which aspects?

I got a new PS and cinephile mentioned you. Do you want to look at it?

Here.

You're right, I was too vague.

Well, I'm not talking about a film making a political statement or a social comment, many masterpieces have done that, many directors are known for their political opinions.

I'm talking about the way every cinematic creation must pass now through a sort of sociopolitical scanner, even animated cartoons or blockbusters... I'm not even talking of PC because it seems that politically incorrect humor is accepted for as long as it serves the causes deemed right... the real problem is that Hollywood is getting more and more binary.

For me, the new Borat movie exemplifies what goes wrong with Hollywood today (and I loved the first one)

That's interesting. I guess I suspect what you want me to say, but I don't know how I would pack it into a short and clear formulation for an option. Maybe you have an example - I really would like to use it on the list.

I did love the new Borat movie. It was very unconventional and provoking with the right measure. He is a great guy who knows how the cookie crumbles. But I have to admit that I saw it dubbed. It's a privilege to live in the worlds championship dubbing country. Even though a few jokes might be lost in translation. But I can be pretty sure they did the best.

Well, I don't like to plug my reviews (except for the "watched/review" thread where it makes sense) but you can find it my reviews' page... many moments did make me laugh but the whole political bias ended up interfering with my enjoyment... on the paper, the arc of Borat's daughter was interesting but I'm not sure I liked the way she was exploited for gross-out jokes and then used as a sexy bait... that and many other aspects bothered me.

That was the picture that upset me the most:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13143964/mediaviewer/rm1866652417/

The fact that "All Lives Matter" was written on the 'bad American' T-shirt, I mean I've seen many African-Americans making that statement so I didn't think it was fair to assume that there's only negativity to connect with that belief and so it's fair to mock it that way.

I appreciate your sorrow of young women should be treated with respect. But must say that she forced the humor in a special way that only people with self control can do. I liked how she pointed out what some polititians are ok with to do. I guess you won't be so irrational to think that was true. It was masterful done by Cohen and a very clever young actress. That was intended. They pointed out in the satire how America is. On the one hand, she talked with the ladys about masturbation and they all scorned her. Ok, but when a polititian is ok to meet such a young woman, there will always people who will defend the polititian. For them is their message. They should think about who they trust. I think it's a political movie, because it was relatively short before the US elections. That's how I understood it.

Well, ElMo. I understand your intention, but it was a single movie, not a bad trend in hollywood. So won't take it on the list.

Breu, it was just an example

every cinematic creation must pass now through a sort of sociopolitical scanner, even animated cartoons or blockbusters.

Do you really think that only applied to Borat?

Forget the picture, but you can't ignore politics as the most vicious trend infecting Hollywood right now.

Trumbo? I thought that option was referring to the HUAC?

Did you have other witch hunts in mind?

5.1K Messages

Breu, I have a feeling that you understood where I was coming from but you and I know it's a very difficult subject and the very fact that we can articulate our thoughts and call a spade a spade is part of the problem. I just wrote almost 30 lines to explain my point but then I deleted it all, I'd rather censor myself and keep my bias for myself.

I just wish Hollywood entertainers could do the same.

8.8K Messages

 •

164.5K Points

HUAC, yes. Hollywood was used for HUAC by the CIA. It's a movie about politic misuse of Hollywood. By censoring all, which had the smell of communism. I thought you would think that Hollywood is again used for a witch hunt. "sociopolitical scanner" is a very vaguely simily. It doesn't make really clear what is meant. Maybe you can better describe it. Or is it just the wrong direction of political influence that bothers you? What is wrong, what is right?

When you look at the options on the list, they are all very clear negatively conotated. The political witch hunt in 'Trumbo' is already an option which says that Hollywood is used for it - and oppressed in it's creativity. I think you had a clever point with the sequels, prequels, etc. I love them, but still think you are right with that point, to be neutral best I can. So I've put them on the list. And I would do so again, if I'm convinced.

I'm unable to phrase my thoughts correctly, I'm sorry.

I just have the feeling that everything today must be related to the tryptic of gender - sexuality - diversity, and it is political. It shouldn't be, but it is.

Governments have failed to fix social inequalities, why? Because it's not easy to make the poor less poor... and meanwhile, the rich gets richer. The way I see it, governments needed a scapegoat, something to distract the people from the real issues. In other words, they had to convince people that if they have a problem, it's not because of the way economy works or because political rulers have their hands tied, no, it's because of racism, patriarchy etc.

It's easier to fix that problem by promoting affirmative action, quotas, taking symbolic measures than changing the whole system. And meanwhile, the real social inequalities or the environmental problems are ignored.

It's frustrating enough to see that people are used like pawns and being turned against each other, men, women, LGBT, white, Black, Chrisitians, Muslims etc. etc. but then the last thing you want to see is Hollywood encouraging or nourishing these divisions, but that's what happens. Hollywood has been politicized by issues that weren't political to beging with.

In less than a decade, we had Rosanna Arquette's speech about the gender pay gap, we had #OscarsSoWhite, we had the verbal arm-wrestling between Streep and Trump, (hell, we just had Trump), we had another #OscarsSoWhite followed by polemics about the lack of diversity, we had audiences called misogynistic because they didn't like "Ghostbusters 2", we had the #MeToo movement that wasn't without collateral damages, we had polemics about the lack of female directors, and just when we think things are going better, we have the new 'cancel culture' and JK Rowling being insulted all over the web after all she's done for the world of entertainment.

I'm tired of polemics, of complaints, of vs. .... now maybe the things I've listed can be considered positive and I respect that. But I think I gave you the most possibly transparent answer.

Cheers

Hi Breu,

"Celebrity press worldwide" should be in italics and the first letter of each word should be capitalized (Celebrity Press Worldwide). I couldn't find any publication with that name, by the way, so if it has a link, perhaps provide a hyperlink.

This isn't as important but, just an aside:

#1: chronical --> chronic ("chronical" is not incorrect but it's British English and IMDb uses American English; also, even in British English, apparently it's not standard)

'Great image for #1, by the way. : )

Thank you, ruby. I will change it, but I got no time now in my scedule plan. I will correct it in about 9-10 hours, because I have a full plan today. Celebrity press worldwide isn't a paper. I meant the press that writes about celebrities. I will change that then. Gotta go now. Sorry for that.

Done. Thank you for pointing out the glitch in the matrix.

Image #1: I thought it's the most perfect for it, because we are softly sliding into another economic crisis and I remembered 'Grapes of Wrath'. I think it had the most iconic unemployed. Everyone who saw this movie will remember it. The worst to pick was a picture that shows drug abuse as negative without hurting to much. And the second worst was to find a fitting booze image.

I chose fame and loss of privacy as all the other options can happen to an extent in any industry or workplace. Some of them are exacerbated by fame and loss of privacy.
