As defined by the Academy, an animated feature film is defined as a motion picture with a running time of greater than 40 minutes, in which movement and characters’ performances are created using a frame-by-frame technique. Motion capture by itself is not an animation technique. In addition, a significant number of the major characters must be animated, and animation must figure in no less than 75 percent of the picture’s running time.

Avatar is probably the weakest from the 4. Best is Toy Story 3.

A Best Picture nomination for The Lion King (2019) in the Oscars 2020 regular Best Picture category would be only the fifth time a movie using an animation technique for most of its frames was nominated in ninety-two years. Despite, these accomplishments the film remains a long shot to win, currently sitting in a 35-way tie at 15th on the odds chart with 100-1 odds.
