LIVE POLL: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer 100th Anniversary 1950s Movies

In 2024, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) celebrates the 100th anniversary of its founding on April 17, 1924. MGM was formed by combining three existing studios: Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Pictures into one major studio. Louis B. Mayer was tapped to lead the newly formed MGM, with 24-year-old wunderkind Irving Thalberg appointed as its head of production. MGM quickly established itself as one of Hollywood's most prestigious studios, known for the quality of their film offerings, their commercial success and for having "more stars than there are in heaven."

Which of these select Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer* produced by and/or presented by films released between 1950 and 1959 is MGM's greatest accomplishment during this period?

* answer pool may include 1950s titles from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer aka MGM (1950-1959), MGM-British Studios (1950-1959), a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer subsidiary and MGM Cartoons, a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer division (1950-1957)

Friendly Persuasion appears to be an Allied Artists production and release.

@Peter_pbn,

I amended the comment to "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) global release (excluding USA)" to be even more specific from just "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) release".

Around the globe, the film's posters almost universally declared the film to be presented by MGM in 1956.

In order to be in the answer pool, the movie must be a "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer* produced by and/or presented by film released between 1950 and 1959." About 90%+ of the answer pool options meet both requirements with a handful of options having MGM as a distribution partner and are only being released by MGM. Still in a lot of cases these distribution partners have minor to major roles in production, that include things like having a say in upfront casting approval, final cut approval for the countries for which they hold the distribution rights, utilizing the studio's stars, other resources and more.

MGM came up with funds to cover the budget shortfall toward the end of Friendly Persuasion's shoot, in order to finish the film when the film went over budget. I couldn't verify if that deal made them a stakeholder, but it did at least get them Friendly Persuasion's foreign distribution rights for their investment. Allied had greenlit the film with a $1.5 million budget, but the movie's total budget ended up being double that at $3 million, so MGM's investment likely was substantial. Plus, these partnership deals sometimes result in the secondary studio owning the film outright or with certain film rights, the rights to make any sequel/remake or the movie being part of secondary studio's film library, etc. Mostly with the main or lead production company relinquishing their interest in the film after they have reaped the lion's share of the profits from the film's first-run. That is in part, why I ask the and/or question, as the studio's role may not have black & white clarity.

Regardless, all I claim here is that they released the movie in every market but one (not the USA). I don't claim that the movie was even a MGM co-production, even though they ended up financing up to half the film's final production budget.

I have verified every answer option and feel comfortable every answer falls within the poll's scope. I have made a note for those answer options that require a more detailed explanation of how they qualify when needed. I used multiple resources and when they didn't agree, I sought out the reason. I removed any that that I thought were disputable or couldn't be reasonably justified. Please, let me know if you have any other questions about any of the MGM polls. I solidly believe this poll and the other MGM decade polls are all ready to go and accurate

However, I amended the answer pool for the 1950s poll and swapped one answer for another. I thought the poll was stronger as is, but while 'Pat and Mike' is not as highly rated, as 'Friendly Persuasion', it is both an MGM production and a MGM release, so it doubly qualifies for inclusion.
