#35 Oscar-Nominated Sovereign Everything Else Category

which polltakers can vote any of the dozen or so Oscars nominated soveriegns not listed.

I plan to use a Oscars nominated Napoleon image from Conquest (1937) as an example for now, with a possible 2024 Oscar-Nominated image upgrade [if character gets a second nomination in Napoleon (2023)].

I added the term real-life, fictional or alleged to the notes to account for Oscar-nominated sovereigns that may be royal claimants to the throne or be a character with an Anastasia-like plot twist. I can't think of any previous Oscar nominees that would fall into either category, but more to anticipate a future Oscar-nominated character scenario.

@Peter_pbn Thanks, corrected.

In January 2023, Angela Bassett's portrayal of Queen Ramonda, Regent of Wakanda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for the 95th Academy Awards.

In reviewing all the options, I am consciously choosing to expand the sovereign scope of this poll to include rulers and co-rulers for the following reasons: 1) the poll is as much about Oscar performances, as it is about a named position held; 2) I am choosing not to endorse a system of ruling which for millennias considered women the choice of last resort; 3) the five consorts listed represent some of the biggest stars of their eras and some of the greatest actors, male or female to ever perform; 4) their real-life consort counterparts wielded incredible power (often more than their husbands) either directly throughout their husband's reign, or through their issues that succeeded them on the throne; 5) lastly they all had historical impacts for the betterment or detriment of the country or the world.

  • Katharine Hepburn in The Lion in Winter as Eleanor of Aquitaine
  • Helena Bonham Carter in The King's Speech as Elizabeth  Marguerite Bowes-Lyon
  • Helen Mirren in The Madness of King George as Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz
  • Bette Davis in Juarez as Carlota, aka Charlotte of Belgium
  • Norma Shearer in Marie Antoinette as Marie Antoinette

Interesting that Elizabeth Taylor got no nomination for Cleopatra.

Well, right now is an awkward time to even bring up Hollywood portrayals of any ancient Egyptian Pharaohs, especially Cleopatra. Some folks insist upon being willfully ignorant of incontrovertible forensics and, by extension, probable truths surrounding the historical matter, often filling in the gaps in public knowledge with utter nonsense.

@riverotter I understand, there too many great options to choose from.  So far, the voting is more evenly distributed than you see in most polls.
