THE CASE FOR AVATAR AS AN ANIMATED FEATURE

Avatar 2009 | Movie 7.8 (1,009,777) Motion-Capture Animation

'Ready Player One' Might Qualify for Best Animated Feature Oscar

As defined by the Academy, an animated feature film is defined as a motion picture with a running time of greater than 40 minutes, in which movement and characters’ performances are created using a frame-by-frame technique. Motion capture by itself is not an animation technique. In addition, a significant number of the major characters must be animated, and animation must figure in no less than 75 percent of the picture’s running time.

Hi Urb, On the list, you say that you are still adding options. Can you post here and let us know when this is ready? It can't go live with the note on the list. Thanks. :)

Yes, I wanted some feedback from others. I don't think Avatar (2009) is that controversial for this list and neither do most others, if I gauge the sentiment of those in the industry and media correctly. But, I wanted to be sure by preventing it from published to quickly, hence the holding period and request for feedback or suggestions. I have removed the notes.

The broader scope is also intended to embrace other emerging animation techniques and styles such as those in Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018), Ready Player One (2018) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) that may not be "animated" by some traditional movie-goer's definition. As well as, old school stop-motion animation techniques like those in Isle of Dogs that have an outside shot at Best Picture nominations.

Avatar is probably the weakest from the 4. Best is Toy Story 3.

Then, the scope of this suggestion is different and covers a much broader assortment of movies, rather than a subset. It includes motion-capture animation using a frame-by-frame technique with a significant number of the major animated characters comprising at least 60-75 percent of the picture’s running time. Your poll seems to be limited to computer animated films only (based on the three Best Picture answer options) and I assume hand-drawn animated (no answer options listed, but none were nominated in regular Best Picture category).

Which of these hand-drawn animated, computer animated or heavily computer-generated imagery movies nominated in the regular Oscar Best Picture category is your favorite?

I do title it differently by using Animation over Animated, I am not sure if there is a better term to describe the broader scope. Movies like The Jungle Book (2016), War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018) and Avatar 2 (2020) would be possible movies if they had been nominated for Best Picture would differentiate this poll.

P.S. The broader scope is also intended to embrace other emerging animation techniques and styles such as those in  The Adventures of Tintin (2011), Ready Player One (2018) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) that may not be "animated" by some traditional movie-goer's definition. As well as, old school stop-motion animation techniques like those in Isle of Dogs.

It should be interesting to see if photorealistic animation films like The Lion King (2019) or the Peter Jackson led The Adventures of Tintin Sequel make it onto the nominee list.

Potential 2020 Oscar Best Picture Nominee @ 92nd Academy Awards
(TOP 50) 2020 Oscar Predictions: Gold Derby Predicts the 92nd Academy Awards

The Lion King 2019 | Movie 7.0 (150,060)

A Best Picture nomination for The Lion King (2019) in the Oscars 2020 regular Best Picture category would be only the fifth time a movie using an animation technique for most of its frames was nominated in ninety-two years. A notable mark for an award ceremony that over its history has demonstrated an aversion to animated films in its premiere award categories, despite the genre's popularity and success at the box office.

The reputation of the original The Lion King (1994) and its snubs a quarter century ago, led to the creation of the Oscar for Best Animated Film. The latest version uses an innovative and ground breaking photorealistic computer-generated technique to remake the original. The The Lion King 2019 grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide, surpassing Frozen as the highest-grossing animated film, and is also the second highest-grossing film of 2019, and the seventh-highest of all-time. Despite, these accomplishments the film remains a long shot to win, currently sitting in a 35-way tie at 15th on the odds chart with 100-1 odds.

I have revised the scope of this poll to Oscar Best Picture movies that were digitally created.

I have changed the poll title from Oscars Face-Off: Best Picture Animation Nominees? to Favorite Oscar-Nominated Digitally-Created Best Picture?

Added Life of Pi (2012)

The film which employed a 3000+ VFX artists and roughly a dozen VFX houses to created the digitally altered frames used for the film. Nearly all the water scenes and animal screens were digitally altered totaling 1h30m+ screetime for the movie's 2h7m running time.

Digitally Created Oscar Best Pictures Answer Pool Candidates

(These Oscar Best Picture nominees seem to be laden with VFX, just matter of how they were created, how much those scenes dominate the running time, and also lavishly the production spent, as seemingly traditionally filmed scenes can be tweaked digitally and thus qualify as a digitally altered frame.) I have compiled a list of possible candidates based on best picture and visual effects Oscar nominations, in some cases listing them to vet and eliminate them to be sure.

The tricky part seem to be getting a firm percentage, as 1) a number is usually not readily available 2) studios may not reveal or even be secretive about which scenes where altered or digitally created (ie Disney's Beauty in the Beast (1991) or 3)  the key seems to be finding a relevant article where a number is cited by the VFX team or crew member.
