Gone with the Wind (1939) officially premiered at the Loew's Grand Theatre in Atlanta, GA on December 15, 1939 and was an instant success. The David O. Selznick production reigned as the highest grossing movie in the world from 1940 through 1966 (until being displaced by The Sound of Music (1965)) and regained the top spot again from 1971 through 1972 (until being displaced by The Godfather (1972)). When factoring for inflation, the movie has never relinquished the record as the world's highest grossing film, continuously holding the title since shortly after its original release. Its cumalative total gross of $200,882,193 (as of 2022) in unadjusted dollars represents an estimated 202,286,200 total theater admissions sold and totals about $1,895,421,694 when counted in 2022 US dollars.

In  2024, Gone with the Wind (1939) will officially celebrate its 85th anniversary and continues to add to its record haul through continued re-releases and theatrical showings that always turn out an audience.
