LIVE POLL: Are the Razzies Funny or Mean-Spirited?
The Golden Raspberry Awards, better known as Razzies, are an awards tradition that stated goal is to honor the worst in film annually. The Golden Raspberry Foundation claims the award "encourages well-known filmmakers and top notch performers to own their bad." Further, they claim to have been a "counterbalance to the Oscars since 1981. In that time, the mock ceremony has handed out some humbling awards to some of Hollywood’s brightest stars." But, the parody award is not without its critics. Detractors question the value of the award by pointing out a flawed nomination process and resulting bad inclusions and striking ommisions of nominees over the years. These issues coupled with how unapologetic the organization has been in their own mis-steps and its failure to follow their own mantra: "ONLY THE BEST OWN THEIR BAD!" has resulted in a public relations nightmare. In your opinion, are the annual Razzie Award nominations a funny take or more mean-spirited take on some of the worst films and performances of the prior year? @urbanemovies , Please change the title of your list from: PS: Face-Off: Are the Razzies Funny or Mean-Spirited? To: Face-Off: Are the Razzies Funny or Mean-Spirited? = = = I suspect the Razzies follow in the comic tradition of Don Rickles and The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast, and Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988–1999). As such the Razzies are frequently mean spirited and occasionally outlandishly funny.

I corrected the error. I think the comment is probably fair. I would guess the 80/20 or 90/10 rule comes into play, as far as, a mean-spirited to funny ratio. An award like this could really be fun, both for the public and the industry. IMHO, I think they really could build the brand if they came any where near to being like The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast or Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988–1999). I think they miss the mark though, more often than not. Aside, from the PR disasters that seem to happen yearly, they need to raise their own standards before trying hold others up to some bar of excellence.

I feel like the academy awards are more insulting, harmful, and mean-spirited to the art of filmmaking and audiences world-wide than the Razzies. The Razzies are just honest, for the most part. The academy awards are a conceited popularity contest influenced by internal social connections and politics.

They can be both, funny and mean-spirited. The biggest problem with the awards (coming from someone who has been an on/off member of said group) is that they have become a tad too lazy and addicted to the virality/memeification of said awards. They end up targeting celebrity du jour rather than trying to actually pinpoint a year's given worst crop of films and actors. The nomination of Ryan Kiera Armstrong was the last straw for me. I won't ever renew my membership again.
