Poll Suggestion: The Academy Awards: Art or Spectacle?
Intro:
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards, colloquially known as the Oscars, are the world's most prominent film awards, known for red carpets, glitz, and media spectacle. Yet critics argue they often promote Hollywood's elite and major studios more than genuinely honor cinematic art. Which way do you lean? Do the Academy Awards mostly reward real cinematic excellence, or are they more like a marketing spectacle? Please discuss it here.
Suggestions:
The titles are debatable. Option #1 should be an artistically strong film that truly deserved its nominations, while option #2 should be a nominated or even awarded film that was criticized for being nominated. There was controversy around 'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close' (Rotten Tomatoes about 46%, but 5 Oscar nominations). I think option #1 works well as it is. If I chose a title like 'The Godfather', it would probably manipulate the results, so I picked a more moderate choice instead.
Intentionally, there are only two options, because I want to force a clear decision from the voters.
I don't want it to be inconclusive.
