Speaking from my experience, the movies that kept my heart beating at the highest rate weren't horror movies though they had to deal with a certain form of horror, these movies were:
In Cold Blood
A Woman Under the Influence
Elephant

Good poll! Of the ones that I've seen, a few of these movies didn't scare me at all but The Exorcist scared me so much that I can't even watch a trailer of it now, lol.
May I suggest one very small edit to the intro? ('In bold below: a colon instead of a semi-colon. The intro is very good, by the way.)
