Hi Brijesh, This is (yet another!) very good poll that was very well researched. (Bravo!) I'm going to have a tough choice voting because there are five films on the list that do the books justice, or come very close, which is amazing because those five are also great novels (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Grapes of Wrath, The Age of Innocence, The Hours / Mrs. Dalloway, The Yearling).

Since you're specifying adaptations of the books, I don't know that 'The Hours' fits exactly: it's based on the book but it's not really an adaptation of the novel in the strict way that "adaptation" is most often used. One of the segments, for example, is about Virginia Woolf as she writes Mrs. Dalloway. The other two segments certainly share some of themes of the book and they each start with preparations for a party, which the book does, as well, but, for example, the characters, while sharing some similarities, aren't the same. I don't know, I guess it could be considered an adaptation in the most liberal sense of "adaptation" but I'd say that it's more of an illumination of that novel and Woolf's life and work, in general. I've assigned that film when I've taught Woolf's work and I've never called it an adaptation but I suppose one could stretch the meaning of "adaptation" and it's your call, of course.

RaviNathan's edits are definitely good but may I suggest a few more? (in bold below)

Yeah, I agree about "fiction novel" being redundant. Since Truman Capote sort of described 'In Cold Blood' as a kind of "nonfiction novel," I guess that there are a few people who are starting to use novel to mean any long book but eww, lol... Capote could get away with it because, well, he was Capote, lol, and he was trying to describe his book, which broke genre boundaries in some ways, but other people trying to actually change the definition? Ugh. : )

Oh and congratulations on becoming an uncle again! I love being an aunt. 'Very cute baby, by the way. Are you an uncle x2 because you had another before or because the baby has a twin? (!)

Brij, I hope it's ok that I used your thread for this little side issue of cute babies, lol.

Thank you so much. 🙂

I have done the edits. Also, I have changed the question slightly to remove 'adaptation' word but kept elsewhere. It may not be true adaptation, but as per Academy and general public 'adapted from' is ok.

I should have mentioned that even with the word "adaptation," I think including 'The Hours' is fine and in fact like it. It may not be the most common usage of the word but the book was adapted for use in an another medium so yeah, why not? I only mentioned it in case you hadn't read the book or seen the movie and wanted a more strict usage of "adaptation."

This is a misunderstanding. The Hours is a close adaptation of the Pulitzer-winning novel The Hours by Michael Cunningham.

Wiki for novel and movie both says "based on the book". So, I wasn't sure about it without watching the movie. I think the description still fits anyways.

Thanks for clarifying that though. 🙂
