Honorable mention:

Randa Haines director of Children of a Lesser God

Sam Taylor-Johnson director of 50 Shades of Grey

Sanjay Leela Bhansali director of Devdas

Note 1: There is one vacant place on the list, I'm not sure who to add yet.

Note 2: I could remove Vsevolod Pudovkin.

FYC: Kasi Lemmons, director of Harriet

(perhaps instead of Dumont)

I think that out of the suggested directors, Sam Peckinpah would be the best replacement for Bruno Dumont.

Here is my logic:

In order:

1: Sam Peckinpah

2: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

3: Andrzej Wajda

4: Raoul Walsh

5: Sam Taylor-Johnson

6: Randa Haines

7: Kasi Lemmons

8: Bruno Dumont

I agree Peckinpah is also a good choice.

Since there are no women and only two obvious people of color on the list, I did a little research for my own curiosity more than anything and wow, this is not an easy subject to research and/or there just really aren't many female directors under this sign, which doesn't surprise me because historically there haven't been many female directors but I thought I'd find more than two. Anyway, one's work is really not well known and the other just hasn't done much directing but FYC:

Drew Barrymore

Malgorzata Szumowska

By the way, when I saw Spike Lee and Robert Altman right next to each other, I thought, wow, this is going to be tough.  : )

I found one! Olivia Wilde: so far, she's only directed one feature-length film but it's a big one ('Booksmart') and she has two upcoming that look like they'll be widely released.

There's also Margarethe von Trotta, although a good bit of her work is relatively obscure.
