I'll have to vote for the microscope. I love biology. Fun fact: Did you know that you cannot actually observe any living creatures under electron microscope, because the high energy electron beam will instantly kill any of them? :D

Sorry, but you are missing the most important invention of the past 1000 years. It did more to bring the world out of the dark ages than anything else.
The answer?
Johannes Gutenburg (German) invented the PRINTING PRESS.
The second greatest German contribution to the world was probably Martin Luther and the start of the Protestant Reformation.

How about the food: schnitzel (I know I spelled that wrong) and German sausage and the pastries and German potato salad and German chocolate...
Liederhosen? probably another wrong spelling
The castles? Such as Mad King Ludwigs Neishwandstein (another bad spelling guess). Other than Buckingham Palace, this is probably the most famous castle in the world.
