There are too many German popular achievements to make a poll about it.

With those restrictions, you could probably find 1000+ options. I can't name only 2.

For me as a German, the biggest achievement is one, no other language has a benefit for, except Hollywood. The big link between Hollywood and Germany is the tremendously big dubbing industry. We got it all dubbed. Especially older Germans - older than 30 are mostly grown up with dubbed movies. I grew up with it and I don't need authentic lip synchronity. For me it's enough when they do a good job, so it won't make a bad impression with lips moving when there is no tone. We always mourn, when a good and usual voice actor dies. In Germany we mostly always keep the same German voice for the same actor - over decades. That's because we don't like that chanching. We get used to hear exact that voice on that actor. If the voice dubbing industry wasn't, American movies would never have gained that position in Germany from the beginning. With the dubs, the movies reached a way more wide audience in Germany.

When you ask me for some the best actors/actresses, I would say Götz George, Gert Fröbe, Thomas Kretschmann, Iris Berben, Heike Makatsch, Daniel Brühl, Julia Jentsch Hannelore Elsner, Marlene Dietrich, Romy Schneider, Karoline Herfurth, Jürgen Prochnow and so many more.

You forgott Beethoven. His music is present in more than 1.600 productions listed on IMDb.

I watched this TV series in German and found it funnier than in the original English version. They have not translated word by word, they created whole new dialogs and included new accents. Amazing job in my opinion:

Other TV series that I watched also in German and I regard them as an excellent work in dubbing:

German cars. Without Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, we would be not at that technical state now. Maybe another one would have invented the gasoline engine, but it would have taken more time. Maybe WWII would have taken place without planes and submarines. Maybe that would have been a benefit, but on the other hand. ...

cinephile is right. There are thousends of good achievements from Germany.

I think the best of Germany is not exact Modern Talking, it's just one of the most known.

Goethe

Schiller

Lessing

Wilhelm Bush - He did one of the first comic books. In G especially older people know his drawings and stories which had an educational background. ("Die Fromme Helene", "Max and Moritz")

Painters like Carl Spitzweg & Albrecht Dürer.

@Breumaster thank you for your feedback. Good suggestions to add to my list. Kraftwerk was already on it. Must be. I am looking for really popular stuff. I have just noticed that I forgot to include Beckenbauer...👍

And Volkswagen!

By the way, have you watched Ein Kafig Voller Helder? (I mentioned above). I think it is hilarious with the German dubbing. The Akzente alone make me laugh. 😃

@mariojacobs You might want to go through your answer list again. I think more than few options can have better title to represent them in the poll, either a more well-known or better voted option or the title that is considered their masterwork. As example, German Directors

Werner Herzog, German Director

Either a more well-known or better voted option or the title that is considered their masterwork.

 Leni Riefenstahl, German Director

The film was released in two parts: Olympia 1. Teil — Fest der Völker (Festival of Nations) (126 minutes) and Olympia 2. Teil — Fest der Schönheit (Festival of Beauty) (100 minutes).

Triumph of the Will (GermanTriumph des Willens) is a 1935 German Nazi propaganda film directed, produced, edited and co-written by Leni Riefenstahl

Fritz Lang, German Director

Plus, Fritz Lang was a German citizen up until 1939, so I think he should be listed. Lang's most celebrated films include the groundbreaking futuristic Metropolis (1927) and the influential M (1931), a film noir precursor.

Wolfgang Petersen, German Director

@mariojacobs I like the idea and think you have gotten off to a great start.

Which of these remarkable German popular cultural achievements is your favorite? (TV series, movie, director, actor, singer, rock band, cartoon, book, supermodel)

But, I find the answer list a bit jumbled, with too many bench players and not enough heavy hitting German icons listed.

IMHO, I think this poll idea would be better served by doing an all-time version and a modern day popular version (maybe 21st century). It would allow for both the proper recognition, as well as, the inclusion of more modern popular options that don't belong on a all-time list.

I think if you do internet searchs, like "greatest German (fill in the discpline)" or "Most popular German (fill in the discpline)", you will find a ton of great options for your polls. I have listed some possible options, I think should be at the very least be under consideration using four cultural disciplines. Imagine the possibilities, if you did search for every different cultural discipline.

As an example, for Supermodels: Heidi Klum and others.

As an example,  for Musicians/Composers: Hans Zimmer, Wagner, Schubert, Strauss, Schumann, Bach and others.

As an example,  for Athletes: Dirk Nowitzki, Katrina Witt, Birgit Fischer-Schmidt and others.

As an example, for Actresses: Marlene Dietrich, Martina Gedeck, Diana Kruger, Franka Potente, Nina Hoss, Nazi Baetz, Natassja Kinski and others.

@urbanemovies since there are already german directors and actors polls, I will keep only musicians: Modern Talking, Nena, Scorpions, Accept...

@mariojacobs Then you probably should restrict the question and answer pool to that scope, so it won't be misinterpreted as being a broader one than it is.

@urbanemovies thank you for your suggestion, but I checked Poll Watch and there are already live polls on the subjects: german actors/directors and german movies.

This time I will focus then on german pop musicians and rock/pop bands.

To my dismay I will have to make a new PEOPLE list:
