I'd vote Raging Bull. Too bad his best film, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, does not make the list. Just more proof that the top 250 on this website is based on immature fanboy favorites and not quality.
I haven't seen Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. But, sometimes it seems people like to put Scorsese into a box, they associate him with gangster films and other violent films. Indeed, he is more than that, he made films he nearly genre (documentary, romance, religious biopic, family, sport, comedy, historic drama, musical) My absolute favorite of his is The Age of Innocence (1993).
@cinephile Maybe he has been put in the box because of the huge percentage of films he has made that do glorify and promote violence and organized crime. I recognize that there are other films in his repertoire, but they are often overshadowed by his successful movies about lowlifes and the scum of the earth. I also enjoyed The King of Comedy.
I can confess that Hitchcock is strongly associated with thrillers. But, is Kubrick really associated with war films? Is Spielberg really associated with adventure films?
@cinephile Kubrick has Full Metal Jacket, Dr Strangelove, Barry Lyndon, Paths of Glory, Spartacus and Fear and Desire. These all are war films. As for Spielberg he sure has more variety than the others but many of his films are adventures
