Live Poll: Lovecraftian Films and TV series

From Oxford Languages:

Lovecraftian /ˈləvˌkraftēən,ˌləvˈkraftēən/ adjective relating to or reminiscent of the work of the US fantasy and horror writer H. P. Lovecraft (Howard Phillips Lovecraft, 1890–1937), especially in depicting monstrous, misshapen beings from another dimension or universe, often in sinister, antiquated New England settings.

FYC, please correct you list hyperlink. https://www.imdb.com/list/ls564970061/

Also, I would suggest hedging a bit in your question. I think it suggests to direct a correlation between the sceenwriters reading Lovecraft and then penning the film. Maybe add "seemingly" to qualify it or change the phrasing to not make that direct link, but point out how these films share a common bond with Lovecraft's writings that preceded them.

Which popular film inspired by H. P. Lovecraft's work is your favorite?

Alternatives

Which of these popular films seemingly inspired by a H. P. Lovecraft's work is your favorite one?

Which of these stories or creatures from a popular movie shares a common bond with the writings of H. P. Lovecraft  the most?

or

Another question more to your liking.

I do not know I found your suggested questions wordy.

@cinephile One, I agree it is more wordy, the other only adds two words, While, brevity and a low word count is nice, clarity and accuracy are the overriding goals. I like to give options, if it were my suggestion, my preferred question would be this one with only an extra word added:

Which of these popular films seemingly inspired by a H. P. Lovecraft's work is your favorite?

Aliens was not inspired by HR Giger?

@mariojacobs

It was surely inspired by HR Giger. But, it does not mean that it was not inspired by or that there is not a likeness to the work of H. P. Lovecraft. Basically, in these films I included films that have cosmical, multidimensional monsters or other references to the work of Lovecraft.

@cinephile If you add seemingly, as a modifier it would solve that issue. As stated, the question is very definitive and you are saying without a doubt it was inspired by him with no proof and supposition on your part. Also, as @mariojacobs points you are implicitly denying credit to those who may have had more influence on these films. Again, I think hedging here a bit is the right move.

Also, you should check your Evil Dead answer options @ #14 and #26, I think they could be edited.

  • #14 sequel, not remake and tho either is typo or an unknown abbreviation to me and others ???) I slightly prefer the sequel (Evil Dead II) but other folks prefer the original - you can't go wrong with either.
  • #26 A decent enough reboot of the classic franchise.

Wouldn't CLive Barker's movies and creatures (the Cenobites) fit too?

@cinephile

FYC, the True Detective and Twin Peaks are TV series and are not  classified as movies. Therefore, they fall outside the scope of your question, "Which popular film inspired by H. P. Lovecraft's work is your favorite?" and poll theme, Lovecraftian Films.

You could add the term, TV series to the title and question or alternatively leave it as is and simply delete both answer options. A third option would be to use 1992 film 'Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me' as a standing for both TV series, at least salvaging one answer option.

Could the word "picture" be interpreted as encompassing both cinema movies and television series? I'm just not sold on the idea that there is some kind of imperative to specify that criteria extend to both types.

@jeorj_euler I am not claiming to know for sure. But, even the synonym for "films" is "motion pictures", which to me implies picture itself is not enough to describe films by itself. It may be a type of picture, but you really need the motion modifier added. Even then the trap is not whether it correct or not, it is its the common usage. I don't think I have ever heard anyone refer to TV series as "motion pictures", even though it seems to fit the dictionary definition. As a result, I think it would be misleading and confusing.

In a way, the individual episode is a movie, but a series of them is always literally a series of them.

I will limit the scope of the poll to TV series and films.

@cinephile I wasn't suggesting the video game, just pointing it out as a point of interest, when I tripped over it doing a search for the Irish movie, 'The Shore'. Thanks for doing the edits, the title still needs to match the question's scope,  something like Lovecraftian Film and TV for instance.

Has there ever even been a poll that contained both movies and video games as options? Usually these sorts of things are segregated like oil and water.

@jeorj_euler I have done it a couple times. In this case, I thought the video game blade runners were more well known than the lesser movie blade runner characters.

@jeorj_euler I'm pretty sure I made a few that work video games and movies into a poll. But I word it/structure it in a way that even then, there are limited numbers of options and it would be a stretch to even reach the maximum of 35.

FYI, I am not 100% sure ˈləvˌkraftēən,ˌləvˈkraftēən was the cause of the ?? rendering on your poll. But, it might be something to note going forward.

I don't know about Lovecraftian themes, but True Detective had a lot of real life child abuse themes from a branch of the baptist church
