My vote: Lagaan, I haven't seen many Indian films, but this one was a really pleasant surprise, and besides enjoying the story, it has my favorite Bollywood soundtrack.

The whole soundtrack of Lagaan is truly one of the best in the 21st Century. Her song from Lagaan is really a prayer and her rendition makes it feel so authentic. 🙂

When I was 12, which means a long time ago... I saw a documentary about the history of India (20th century history) and I still remember a moment where right after the independence, they showed an old grainy black-and-white footage with a very young Indian woman singing a song that celebrated it and I remember it was superimposed with other images (people, landscape, I don't know)... I wonder if it was that singer who just passed away. Was she active when India became independent?

She was active then but not quite mainstream. Her most famous independence song is '"Vande Mataram" which she sang later in the 90s but usually used in videos because of its impact. Another one "Aye Mere Vatan ke Logo" from 1962, is also great.

@Brijesh Well, it's possible that the voice-over narration referred to her as a legendary singer because it was made in the 90s but it showed a clip of her debuts, now I'll try to find this documentary somewhere...
