Live Poll: Happy 75th Birthday, Lucky Luke!

Along with Tintin and Asterix, Lucky Luke certainly stands on the podium of the most iconic ambassadors of the Belgian-French school of comic-books.

Along with Tintin the reporter and Asterix the little Gaul, Lucky Luke, the "poor, lonesome, cowboy" certainly stands on the podium of the most popular, iconic and defining characters of the Franco-Belgian Comic-book school.

He was created in 1946 by Maurice de Bevere aka Morris, a Belgian drawer who, like many other people of his generation, was impregnated by all the Hollywood Golden Age classics, and its domineering genre: Western.

Morris, and this applies to writer Goscinny (who wrote Asterix' adventures) spent some time of his life in New York and had the chance to be plunged in the very culture that entertained his youth and childhood, and that inspired the iconic cowboy who draws his gun faster than his shadow (a catchphrase that became synonym of 'quickness' in French language).

Therefore, all the adventures of Lucky Luke constitute one of the greatest tributes to whatever defines the Old West myth, each one focusing in a particular episode of the Conquest of the West, gold and oil rushes, the telegraph, the railroad adventure.

As for Goscinny's humor, it was not political, not thought-provoking, but always with this mix of wit, inventiveness and sophistication that would appeal to both kids and adults. His greatest creation would be the Daltons brothers: Joe, William, Jack and the tallest and most stupid one, Averell who embodies one of Goscinny's greatest talent: creating stupid characters with a level of brilliance that makes them particularly endearing, Rin-Tin-Can, the dog, is one of them.

So celebrating the 75th anniversary of the iconic cowboy, which screen adaptation of his adventures is your personal favorite?

The live action versions don't seem very popular, what do you think?

@Peter_pbn

Well, I rated the Terence Hill version a 5, the one with Dujardin a 6

and a  4  for the dreadful "Daltons".

I wonder what it is that makes the cowboy's adventures so difficult to translate into the live-action format, maybe writers didn't understand the secret of the comic-book adventures, or maybe "Lucky Luke" was already a parody of Hollywood western and you can't really use it as a basis for a cinematic parody without failling into redundancy...

They try to change it a little bit, adding elements of sci-fi or deepening the character of Lucky Luke but unfortunately it never quite works, I wish Alain Chabat could make a live-action version like he did for "Asterix and Cleopatra", perhaps the best comic-to-screen adaptation (the most successful anyway).

The American version with Terence Hill could work but his heart wasn't in it and the film was just poorly made...

Are you a fan of the comics? Must be popular in Denmark.

Yes, I used to read them and they have always been popular here. Everyone knows who's "faster than his own shadow".

I'm sure you're also a fan of Asterix (the earlier albums I guess), there's one where they meet the Vikings and it's strongly implied that they're in Denmark... I love when they try to communicate with them but they don't know where to put the / and the ° only Idefix was able to communicate with the Great Dane...

Have you read the album? It's "The Great Crossing".

I did read many of them, but not in a long time.

ElMo,

We tried publishing this, unfortunately the current description is too long for the poll system, so you need to shorten it a little bit so this gets accepted and can go live.

Done, let me know if that works. Otherwise, I'll keep the trivia bit for the thread.
