Live Poll: Favorite Fictional Martial Arts Fighter Character

Bruce Lee (1940 – 1973) was a Chinese-American martial artist, actor, director, martial arts instructor and philosopher.

He was the founder of Jeet Kune Do, a hybrid martial arts philosophy drawing from different combat disciplines.

Bruce Lee is considered by critics, media and other martial artists to be the most influential martial artist of all time and a pop culture icon of the 20th century, who bridged the gap between East and West.

Perhaps you should specify "martial arts fighters" in the question to exclude boxers and others.

Personally, I found it very confusing to figure out the scope these polls. Your first poll makes no explicit mention in the title or text that was about real-life people, readers are only left to guess since it is implied.

It would have been better if you had made it crystal clear in the title, text and question in both, especially the original poll.

Favorite Real-Life Martial Arts Fighter

Favorite Fictional Martial Arts Fighter

Excluding Bruce Lee, who is your favorite real-life fighter character?

Who is your favorite fictional fighter character?

@mariojacobs

Why are using italics for Bruce Lee's name twice in this poll suggestion?

I think this works better as two sentences for length reasons and as it is written it is contradictory. You state critics, media and other martial artists consider him a pop culture icon, when it is the larger population who determines that.

FYC,
Bruce Lee is considered by critics, media and other martial artists to be the most influential martial artist of all time.  A pop culture icon of the 20th century, Lee was a worldwide star who help to bridged the gap between East and West.

@urbanemovies Ok, I agree with the real and fictional adjectives. This is one is about fictional fighters as the title now says.

>Why are using italics for Bruce Lee's name twice in this poll suggestion?

Can't Italics be used on names?

3rd paragraph split.

The italicization of text is mainly for titles of works and the names of vehicles, not people, companies or nations.

@jeorj_euler ok, italics changed to bold.

We also use italicization when referencing the identification of constants, variables and parameters (often only for scalar, imaginary or complex values) in mathematics.

@mariojacobs

There are style rules for their use and when to use them and when not use them.

Every spelling mistake, grammatical mistake and style mistake and title capitalization error just makes it more likely your poll will not get published. It is tough enough already, you don't need to go shoot yourself in the foot to take yourself out the running.

I would reccomend using the grammar checker tool and the capitalize my title tool, even when you are sure your text is right.

I forgot to mention the custom of italicizing words or phrases that come from another language but in the same script/alphabet; for example, "e.g." ("exempli gratia"), "i.e." ("id est") and "etc." ("et cetera"), among others, from Latin, or je ne sais quoi, from French.

(The principle of senatus consultum ultimum may be in effect when the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus is suspended. In the legalese of English common law tradition, there are many terms like this: "pro se", "pro bono", "certiorari", "amicus curiae", "actus reus", "mens rea", "malum in se", "malum prohibitum", "ex post facto", "a priori", "a posteriori" et al.)

Do they have to be fictional? There are at least two Chinese dramatization film franchises centered around the Man who introduced Bruce Lee to Weng Chun.

@mariojacobs,

Your answer pool seems very human male centered with that segment taking up 80% of the amswer slots. I think you should look to add more fictional characters and strive to be more balanced. For instance, these groups have no fictional martial arts representation in your answer pool: 0% human female characters, 0% animal female characters, and 0% rat characters).

There are at least a dozen fictional martial artist lists on Wikipedia, sorted in every imaginable way and dedicated to this very topic, that are ready made to help you to fill out your answer pool:  (###https://en.www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Fictional_martial_artists###) In fact, there are more listed fictional martial lists (23+) on Wikipedia than there are listed fictional martial artists in your answer pool (14).

Along that line of thinking, รับบทเป็น เซน Zen from ช็อคโกแลต Chocolate would make a fine addition, but at the moment, I'm not able to think of more characters (besides TMNT ones) who do don't belong to our species.

Nice, if representation and star power are some of your goals here. You could add Sensei Jimbo and change the Sensei Splinter version. Then, you would have two fictional animal martial artists, and be more inclusive on the acting side too with three under represented groups.

Jimbo

You should check the Wikipedia fictional martial artists lists to see what other better options or gross omissions exist that could be added. You still have rooom for five more and have five weaker options listed, when there are at least ten iconic options currently unlisted that could be added to your pool.

@mariojacobs,

How come there are a bunch of characters on the final thirty-five list that I have never hear of. But, major characters that kick-ass, like Daredevil, Katana, Elektra, Mr. Miyagi and others didn't make the cut? Plus, It seems odd there is not a single anime martial artist listed either.
