This reminds me of something I once read. I think it was a column or book by William Goldman, but I'm not sure of that. At any rate, it was written by another screenwriter.
The other screenwriter (Goldman?) and Costa-Gavras appeared on a talk show (maybe Nightline?), around 1983, to discuss political messages in movies. The other screenwriter talked about how much one could learn about politicians from one of his films. Then Costa-Gavras said (paraphrased), "For me, the political message of a film isn't that important. I'm mostly just interested in telling a good story."
When the show went to a commercial, the other screenwriter said, "Costa, how can you say that you're not interested in the political message of a movie? Your last film [Missing] was about the CIA overthrowing the government of Chile!"
Costa-Gavras responded, "Bill (?), if I go on television and talk about how important the political message of my movie is, nobody will go to see it!"
Does anyone remember reading this -- especially if it was written by William Goldman?
