Live Poll: Alex Toth — Cartoonist and Character Designer

Alex Toth (1928 – 2006) was an American cartoonist active from the 1940s through the 1980s.

Toth's work began in the American comic book industry, but he is also known for his animation designs for Hanna-Barbera throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

He was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1990 (a set of awards for achievement in comic books, presented from 1985-1987).

Which is your favorite Alex Toth cartoon series?

@mariojacobs

For your consideration, a longer more fitting tribute. Nice poll suggestion, I don't think his work was really appreciated in his day (which sadly was less than a decade ago) and his influence today still resonates in the number of Toth-designed animated series that are currently airing.

FYC,

Alex Toth (1928 – 2006) was a maverick

American cartoonist active from the 1940s through the 1980s. Toth worked for American comic book publishers in the 1940's and 1950s, but is better known for his animation designs for a number of Hanna-Barbera animated series in the 1960s and 1970s. His living legacy is the resurrection of Toth-designed series on Adult Swim and the number of younger animators who cite him as an influence.

Journalist Tom Spurgeon, eulogizing Toth saying he possessed "an almost transcendent understanding of the power of art as a visual story component". Further, he called him "one of the handful of people who could seriously enter into Greatest Comic Book Artist of All-Time discussions" and be in the conversation as "a giant of 20th-century cartoon design" too.

Which of these cartoon series, whose "look and feel" is the result of Alex Toth's animation designs, is your favorite one?

@urbanemovies thank you, I kept the "Jack Kirby Hall of Fame" line. It seems to be an important award in the cartoonist guild...

@mariojacobs, I would disagree, as it makes it unecessarily longer by adding a space line and two additional lines of text. Plus, it deflates the previous paragraph that says he is one of five animators who mastered the two different worlds animators work in, to go on to say is one of 50-75 in one world. If you want to make it longer, it should add to the conversation, not take away from it.

I find this fact far more interesting: That he was still passionately working at 77 y.o.a. and died working at his drawing board to be both romantic and fitting for a legendary animator who lived and breathed comics. You should read a couple of his obits, they are very interesting portraits of the man and his work.

FYC, I would modify the opening sentence to add this one word, maverick, that says tons about the man and his work:

Alex Toth (1928 – 2006) was a maverick American cartoonist active from the 1940s through the 1980s.

@urbanemovies ok then, for me the important thing is to make a little tribute to this man.

@mariojacobs, Just to be clear, I am sharing my take, if you agree it makes sense, change it. Otherwise, don't change it, if you feel the poll suggestion is stronger as-is. As always, you need to make the call on what it is best for your poll suggestions.

@mariojacobs ,

I like the new title, Alex Toth — Cartoonist and Character Designer, but I think a tweak would make it better. I like use of the Cartoonist, as it implies still work in comic books, but character designer only covers a portion of the work he did for animated series. I think the more accurate term is Animation Designer, which covers both characters and backgrounds and implies his work on the other side of business that covers animation and a more big picture or visionary role. So, I think the title, Alex Toth — Cartoonist and Animation Designer is better, IMHO.

@urbanemovies done.

I included

He was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1990.

in the 2nd paragraph.

Now both paragraphs have 5 lines.

This award may be important.

@mariojacobs, I think it works better at the end of the first paragraph, as it transitions into the strong ending. Plus, the sentence works better if it says what the award is for, as written its not going to mean anything to the average person. Plus, I think the honor is better known by another name today. FYC, In 1990, Toth was inducted into the Harvey Award's Hall of Fame, the most prestigious honor given in the comic industry.

Except for two of them, I saw every one of those in reruns at Boomerang as a kid. It is a hard choice, but I'll think I'll go for The Herculoids.

@mariojacobs,

Oddly, I had a milestone poll on the same day too. Fintastic Friday – Threatened Fictional Fish was my 600th live poll. Both totals are mind-boggling, thanks to everyone who has made contributions to help us reach these milestones.
