Live Poll: A Little More Than Roommates?

These movie characters were friends and roommates (for a substantial time of the film) but something in the dynamics going between them might suggest a deeper bond than simple friendship, for better or for worse... although it's never explored to the fullest or the subtext is purely theoretical but we can't totally avoid the feeling of a homoerotic subtext.

Though we respect your disagreement on many of these inclusions, we hope we'll get your vote for the couple that you feel ticks most of, if not all, the boxes of what makes a legit couple.

So, which of these memorable movie duos is the closest to a couple?

You are going to have difficulty making me believe that Tintin and Haddock. For me, Tintin is asexual and Haddock is straight. Hergé is a good storyteller, but he wasn't progressive.

FYC:

Idgie Threadgoode and Ruth Jamison (maybe too obvious)

@cinephile

Oh, whether it was intentional or not is beside the point, not sure other directors were progressive either. What matters is the viewer's perception.

As for Tintin, it's a joke really but there are supporters of the 'gay' theory :

As for your suggestion, wasn't it implied in the film that the two women were lovers?

A poet once said, "the work knows more than its author".

The intention does all the difference. If it is unintentional, the theory is no more than a fan's fantasy.

In the case of Tintin, I think people are trying to identify with their favorite characters by inventing theories that suit them while ignoring reality. In reality, Hergé was a fervent catholic of extreme-right. And, for many years, Tintin was published in Le Petit Vingtième, a conservative newspaper destined for the catholic youth.

If anything, that homoerotic subtext is solely present in Spielberg's film (which I haven't seen in a long time).

As for your suggestion, wasn't it implied in the film that the two women were lovers?

It is more or less implied. To me, the lesbian relationship is obvious, but comparable to the one in Thelma & Louise. As you can see on IMDb's parental guidance, the opinions diverge on the subject. For instance, the user who wrote the Sex & Nudity section definitely believes that it is only friendship.

@Breumaster

Thanks Breu, I like the variety in the results, no solid winners so far and only one option with zero votes....
