LIVE POLL: World Shark Awareness Day — Favorite Fictional Movie Shark

Shark Awareness Day occurs each year on July 14th as a day to inspire action to save sharks from their imminent demise. The day is intended to dispel myths about sharks and to raise awareness about the importance of sharks to the ocean. Sharks play a critical role in keeping larger predatory fish populations in check. As a result, they are crucial cogs in coral reef ecosystems, helping to keep them balanced and thriving. 

Sharks are fished for and consumed by humans for shark meat or shark fin soup. The greatest threat to sustainable shark populations is human activity, with a third of shark species threatened with extinction. Since 1970, shark populations have been reduced by 71%, mostly from overfishing, according to a 2021 study published in Nature. In 2008, it was estimated that nearly 100 million sharks were being killed by people every year, due to commercial and recreational fishing, far outstripping the dozen or so shark attack deaths that occur annually.  

Sharks range in size from the small dwarf lanternshark aka Etmopterus perryi, a deep sea species that is only 17 centimeters or 6.7 inches in length, to the whale shark aka Rhincodon typus, the largest fish in the world, which reaches approximately 12 meters or 40 feet in length. They are found in all seas and are common to depths up to 2,000 meters (6,600 ft). Sharks are among the oldest living lineage of species in the ocean, with fossil records dating back at least 420 million years ago. Modern-day sharks have been around for about 100 million years, predating the dinosaurs, with the more than 500 different species of sharks still in existence today. #SharkAwarenessDay
